At exactly 6:17 p.m. ET, despite having access to a weather radar for the entire day, the New York Yankees announced that Wednesday night's game against the Toronto Blue Jays on May 20 would not be starting on time.
Anybody could've told you that. But we know that sometimes teams handle these possible rain delays strategically to avoid the hassle of postponing, refunding tickets, losing revenue at the gate and in the ballpark, etc.
For this particular instance, we are wondering if the fans got completely hosed. Thunderstorms are rolling in from Pennsylvania as New York City is supposed to get hit around 7 p.m. How long will they last? We know weather is always unpredictable, but one meteorologist is saying around three hours.
If that's the case, Cam Schlittler vs Trey Yesavage will not be tonight. There will either be a doubleheader on Thursday or a postponement to a later day. The good news is that the Blue Jays are in town for a four-game set, so it's not the end of the world if this game starts at, let's say, 8:30 p.m. ET, but that would still inconvenience a whole lot of folks.
According to Accuweather, Yankee Stadium and the surrounding area is on a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. ET. Welcome to West Coast baseball!

Forecast going right as planned since we spoke this morning… There’s a clustering of strong and severe storms, moving and racing into Western New Jersey… This is… pic.twitter.com/P3ybW0waEL
Yankees might have to play Thursday doubleheader vs Blue Jays because of rain
That's all we got for now, so stay tuned for updates as they become available from the team. The Yankees beat should be on top of everything, as they've been providing information from inside the stadium.
The Yankees are hoping to carry their momentum from the past two nights, which featured clutch, razor-thin one-run victories over the Jays, who continue to spiral a bit. They're at the bottom of the AL East, and if they dig themselves into a deeper hole, the playoff picture could become a serious mountain to climb, even in a weak AL.

What's the famous saying? You can win the divsion in April and May, but you can lose it. Something tells us Toronto might be rooting for more aggressive thunder and lightning because Schlittler has been unhittable this season. Yesavage has been great as well, but he faced three of the worst offenses in MLB (Boston, Anaheim and Detroit) since he returned from the injured list.
