Never in the last 20 years would a New York Yankees fan have guessed things might turn out even half this bad for the Boston Red Sox. But Boston's descent into chaos ever since Dave Dombroski was fired less than a year after winning the 2018 World Series has not disappointed.
It all came to a head on Saturday when manager Alex Cora, a revered figure in the city, was fired, along with five other members of his coaching staff. Never before has a team of the Red Sox's caliber gutted the dugout like this after 27 games into a season. The Red Sox were 10-17 at the time of the decision, but that's still hardly a reason to dismiss somebody with somewhere in between $12-$14 million on his contract.
But, oh man, they did. Triple-A skipper Chad Tracy will take over as interim manager, as it's clear Craig Breslow's cold, corporate process reigns supreme. Whether the organization is behind him or not, we will surely find out in the coming months. If Cora was the last obstacle Breslow needed to cast aside to ensure his bosses the Red Sox's struggles aren't his fault, then he better hope Tracy is the right selection.
Whatever the reality or truth is, Yankees fans don't really care. They are LOVING every minute of this suffering from a newly spoiled and entitled fanbase. Talk about the Curse of the Bambino all you want: there are multiple generations of Red Sox fans who mostly know success and historic triumph. The Red Sox's run from 2004 until present day is only rivaled by the team's stretch from 1912-1918. This is no longer a group of sufferers. They've experienced baseball royalty for essentially two decades — something very few organizations can say.
These aren't the downtrodden Guardians, Royals or White Sox we're talking about. This is the Boston Red Sox. Yankees fans will sit back, relax, and watch it burn. Hell, they'll bring gasoline to the party.
Finding out Lawson got canned was a bummer. What an awful coach who was hurting the Red Sox every day he was employed. https://t.co/a9frWZJJGc

Red Sox fire Alex Cora, and Yankees fans' reactions have been incredible
Along with Cora, former Yankees hitting coach Dillon Lawson was also fired. Same with Jason Varitek, another hated figure in Yankees' circles. And it's especially funny watching old, bad Yankees moves be featured as part of the Red Sox's current collapse.
Do you know how bad Lawson was? He was the first midseason coaching dismissal during the Brian Cashman era. The only coach since 1998 to get booted from the dugout before the campaign was over. And you know how the Yankees remain rigid and steadfast in their processes. Cashman deviated big time here, knowing something had to be done.
So when the Sox brought him aboard, it almost felt like they were trying to troll us. If they could make anything out of Lawson, it would've made the Yankees look terrible. Instead? He might've been partly responsible for torpedoing the highly-touted wave of younger players expected to take the Red Sox through the next decade.
Alex Cora's social media behavior is making this better and better, too. Yankees fans hate that guy, but if he manages to burn more bridges on his way out, we'll respect him for the top-tier entertainment.

Yankees have opportunity like no other to flip the script on Red Sox
What's perhaps most important here is the opportunity for the Yankees and their fans to take back the mental edge they had over the Red Sox for so many years before 2004. Boston destroyed New York's identity with that 2004 comeback in the ALCS. They have stomped all over us ever since, up until the 2025 Wild Card series.
It's been long enough. The Yankees have the most recent playoff victory, they just swept the Sox at Fenway to further push them to the brink of the Cora decision, and Boston fans are genuinely unwell. Like, concerningly unwell. It's time to capitalize.
That might sound corny, but it's more than half the battle with this rivalry (you should know that if you've been alive for at least the last 25 years). Even the most delusional Red Sox fan on the planet will tell you how important and satisfying it is to have the ability to constantly put Yankees fans in their place.

Let's put a few other things in perspective, too. The Red Sox acted so hastily here that everything they've done has become a meme over the last 12-18 hours. And it's going to last far longer than that. John Henry, Sam Kennedy and Craig Breslow walking the streets of Baltimore is an all-timer. The "Coaches4Hire" car company that took Cora and Co. away to the airport was a chef's kiss. Trevor Story and Garrett Whitlock calling out the team the very next morning is what dreams are made of.
Complain about Brian Cashman all you want, Yankees fans. We sympathize with you. But at least we can go to sleep every night knowing Kennedy and Breslow are our direct competition and that Cashman would never let anything like this happen. Hate Hal Steinbrenner all you want, but at least he's not despised on two continents like Henry is. Deride the Anthony Volpe situation all you want. The Yankees might've hyped up Volpe and Jasson Dominguez too much, but they didn't do THREE at the same time like the Sox did with Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell — the latter two of whom could very well be massive busts.

Inside the team, some describe the culture as “toxic positivity"
When I asked Sam Kennedy about that, he said:
“If the accusation is that I’m… overly positive, guilty as charged.”

We could go on and on. But we wouldn't want to you to miss catching more of this in real time. Sunday's game hasn't even started yet. There's bound to be many more reports, rumors and comments that emerge over the next 48-72 hours, at least. There will be more Red Sox fan spirals on social media.
Go! Go! Enjoy your Sunday. We don't want you to miss it.
