Yankees fans can't believe Red Sox actually dropped the Alex Cora bomb in coaching staff massacre

On Saturday afternoon, the Boston Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 17-1, laying waste to an Orioles position player on the mound in a 10-run ninth inning to formally put things out of reach.

Asked about the offensive outburst following a whole lot of drudgery (and a sweep at the hands of the Yankees), Sox manager Alex Cora told the media, "That’s fucking baseball, man. It’s unreal."

Hours later, he was fired.

The Sox, now 10-17 and languishing in last place in the American League East, entered the season with the highest of high expectations. So far, their run prevention unit hasn't prevented enough runs to mask the reality that they misread the negotiations with Alex Bregman after running Rafael Devers out of town.

Cora wasn't the sole proprietor of the Devers mess, but he certainly didn't help, and seemed to err on the side of viewing his slugging third baseman as a distraction to begin last season. As it turns out, Breslow - who apparently has the trust of ownership over his World Series-winning manager - thought there were a few more distractions waiting in the weeds.

Cora, fired once prior to the 2020 season due to his role in the Houston Astros' cheating scandal, has been fired yet again. He'd been extended through the 2027 season midway through the 2024 campaign. At the time, it was assumed he was on his way out of Boston, seeking a new (and potentially elevated) opportunity.

But that's not all. Also gone? Sox hitting coach Pete Fatse, bench coach Rámon Vazquez, third base coach Kyle Hudson, former Yankees hitting coach Dillon Lawson, and legendary catcher Jason Varitek, who'd been serving as a "game-planning coach". Knowing Varitek, he probably didn't go down without a fight - and probably kept his mask on for protection during that fight.

UPDATE: According to the Sox's official statement, Varitek has been removed from his post and reassigned within the organization.

Red Sox blow up entire contender after Yankees sweep by firing Alex Cora and Co.

What happened here? What did Cora say on the way out to necessitate his firing? He obviously said something. Or did John Henry finally just get a closer look at the MLB report detailing Cora's 2017 cheating/ringleading?

It's almost unfathomable that, for all of Cora's faults, he was able to outlast Breslow, who had the vision and left his manager flailing/pretending after Friday night's blowout loss to the Orioles that this supposed contender was actually a "youth movement" season on the wrong part of the learning curve.

Whatever you think of Cora, it's seismic to see this occur only one month into a landmark regular season - without a front office ripple or pitching coach Andrew Bailey's departure.
