The tables have turned regarding 'controversial' Yankees-Red Sox trade from 2025

Never judge a trade too early!

The New York Yankees traded catcher Carlos Narváez to the Boston Red Sox for right-hander Elmer Rodríguez in December 2024. By May 2025, it looked like a bad deal for New York.

However, now that we're almost a year removed from that way-too-early judgment, the tables have turned! Shocker. Rodríguez is excelling in the minor leagues and knocking on the MLB door, while Narváez has been struggling for a while (dating back to the second half of last year). Maybe the Yankees didn't lose this deal, after all.

If you'd have asked a Yankees fan on May 25, 2025, about the Narváez-Rodríguez trade, an expletive-laden reply would have followed. Narváez had exploded onto the scene in Boston, looking like a potential All-Star. He was slashing .299/.365/.485 with five homers and playing elite defense. The Red Sox had found their star catcher of the present and future, and the Yankees had been the ones to provide him. Worst-case scenario.

Elmer Rodriguez could be out-pacing Carlos Narvaez for Yankees

While signs of Rodríguez's special talent continued to turn heads as he flashed brilliance on the Yanks' farm, Narváez's MLB impact was the prevailing narrative. Narváez's revenge homer in early June at Yankee Stadium symbolized this entire narrative with one swing. Everyone's minds were made up. The Yankees had lost this trade.

Ironically, that's around the time that Narváez's bat began to grow cold for the Red Sox, and it hasn't warmed up since. After a torrid .356 batting average in May, Narv fell back down to earth in June (.254) and then continued to descend from July (.197) onward. He hit .173 in August and ended up with a .241/.306/.419 line for the season with 15 homers, a much more palatable situation for Yankees fans who were horrified by Narváez's early production.

And to these same Yankees fans' delight, Narváez hasn't been good to begin 2026. Through 14 games, the catcher is hitting .234/.265/.277 with zero homers and a single RBI. Yikes. While Narváez's defense remains valuable, it's no wonder the Red Sox haven't approached Narváez about an extension. His bat might not be good enough to warrant one.

Suddenly, Narváez looks like a far cry from the savior he appeared to be a calendar year ago. He's been benched more often than expected this season by Alex Cora, due to both mysterious disciplinary reasons and the white-hot bat of Connor Wong.

While Narváez's stock sinks, Rodríguez's soars. The 22-year-old righty has been virtually un-hittable in 15 2/3 Triple-A innings this season, with a 1.15 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and .184 opponents' batting average to prove it. Rodríguez has made it abundantly clear that he's ready for a promotion, and the Yankees are bound to pull the trigger soon, given the wobbly state of their bullpen.

The verdict on the Rodríguez-Narváez trade has not been decided, of course. We'll have to see how the young pitcher fares in the Show. But judging his effectiveness after just a few outings won't be a fair assessment. By this time next year, we'll probably have a clearer answer. For now, though, Narváez's fall from fluky, fleeting stardom favors the Yanks.
