The New York Yankees' pitching staff is in a bad way, regardless of what Aaron Boone tells us, and it's time they made an impact move to stop the bleeding.
The organization's No. 3 overall prospect, right-hander Elmer Rodriguez, is ready for the Show. The 22-year-old has exhibited all the signs that beg for a promotion. After a few years of progressing quite nicely on the Boston Red Sox's farm, Rodriguez has come into his own as a member of the Yankees organization. He's followed up an impressive WBC showing for Team Puerto Rico by dominating Triple-A hitters thus far in 2026.
Following his most recent start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Rodriguez now boasts a 1.15 ERA in Triple-A this season through 15 2/3 innings pitched.
The Yankees have a real need for Elmer Rodríguez, so what are they waiting for?

The Yankees have an obvious need for another impact arm on their MLB staff right now. Rodríguez is a starting pitcher, and there's a good chance he'd be a better bet in the Yanks' rotation than Luis Gil. Would New York consider replacing Gil with Rodríguez in the rotation until the return of Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón pushes Rodríguez to the bullpen (presumably joining Gil and Ryan Weathers there)?
That sounds too adventurous, knowing how the Yankees' leadership operates. At the very least, though, Rodríguez can and should be promoted immediately and used as a long bullpen option/spot starter to replace Angel Chivilli, who replaced Yerry de los Santos, who replaced Jake Bird (yeah ... all three were bad). Not to mention, Luis Gil and Ryan Yarbrough have looked particularly ineffective.
When it comes to Rodríguez (as well as Carlos Lagrange, by the way), fans are rightfully asking the Yankees, "If not now, when?" It's a valid inquiry. If now's not the right time to promote Rodríguez — with New York's bullpen taxed, the back of its rotation highly flawed, and Rodríguez owning Triple-A batters left and right — when is the right time?
"Now or never" is a bit strong a phrase to use here, given Rodríguez's youth (22), but "Now or what on Earth are the Yankees actually doing?" works.
An Elmer Rodríguez promotion would break the streak of bad pitching decisions by the Yankees
The revolving door charade we just watched involving Chivilli and de los Santos as Bird replacements ... what was the point of it, exactly? To finally confirm once and for all that neither Chivilli nor de los Santos can be trusted in any meaningful MLB situation? Okay, mission accomplished.
If the Yankees are going to use meaningful MLB games (i.e., any game on your schedule when you're 10-9) to experiment with their bullpen and look to answer questions about their unproven arms, they should at least throw the arms out there with the highest upside. If you're going to gamble away real MLB games, at least choose your most talented horses out of the unproven group in your stable.
It would be a different situation if the Yankees were 15-4 with a sparkling bullpen and a nearly flawless rotation. That's not what's happening. Rodríguez is clearly ready for a real test; throw the kid into the fire.
