It's Tax Day, and the 2024 Yankees officially have to pay the "Road Series Against a Division Rivals Tax" by facing off with the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Jays spoiled New York's home opener, only for the Yankees to grab the next two wins and the series, surviving Saturday night and shushing Vlad Jr., then winning rather easily in the finale. On Monday, they'll get a chance to visit Vladdy's house for the first time this season and check out how their property is doing. But Aaron Judge better not look sideways even once! If so, look out!
Every player will, of course, be wearing No. 42 to honor pioneering Dodger Jackie Robinson.
Probable starting pitchers
- Luis Gil, who was held out of the Cleveland series, starts the opener at the Rogers Centre. Gil looked excellent in his first two starts of 2024, including one where he worked out of early Angel Hernandez-related trouble against these very same Jays. At this moment, he holds a 3.00 ERA and 1.11 WHIP, whiffing 14 in nine innings against two 2023 playoff teams. That'll play. Perhaps, by end of year, he'll be moved to the bullpen, where he can provide that unit some additional swing-and-miss. For now, he'll continue his progress as a starter.
- He'll be opposed by veteran starter Chris Bassitt, who isn't having the start to 2024 that he's gotten used to in recent years. He's been hounded rather than doing the hounding, sporting a 1.813 WHIP through three starters (16 innings).
New York Yankees starting lineup, April 15
1. Anthony Volpe, SS
2. Juan Soto, RF
3. Aaron Judge, DH
4. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
5. Gleyber Torres, 2B
6. Alex Verdugo, LF
7. Oswaldo Cabrera, 3B
8. Austin Wells, C
9. Trent Grisham, CF
Aaron Judge gets another half-day, Giancarlo Stanton rides the bench, but it all makes sense because ... when you're facing Bassitt, you want to stack lefties, who've slashed 280/.351/.528 against him since the start of the 2023 season. This is the first time he's facing a new-look Yankees team that can actually do this in quite a while.
Toronto Blue Jays starting lineup, April 15

5. Cavan Biggio, 2B
6. Alejandro Kirk, C
7. Daulton Varsho, LF
8. Isiah Kiner-Falefa, 3B
