There you have it, Yankees fans. After learning Jasson Dominguez's unfortunate injury will keep him out for a few weeks, the front office went ahead and made the logical decision to promote one of the organization's top prospects.
Spencer Jones is reportedly being called up to the active roster ahead of New York's trip to Milwaukee where they will face the Brewers for a three-game set. And we can expect Jones to remain with the team longer than that.
But the Yankees almost reached what was going to be awkward territory with Jones as he continued to tear the cover off the ball at Triple-A this year.
Spencer Jones is being called up to the Yankees.

Jones is who he is. He's a massive specimen with otherworldly power capable of incredible peaks and subterranean valleys. The sooner the New York Yankees accept this, the better. Right now, he's on one of those classic heaters and has been for much of the 2026 season.
RBIs aren't the glamor stat that they once were, but when you lead all of baseball in the stat, praise is due. When we say all of baseball, we don't mean just Triple-A. Jones' 41 RBI lead the majors all the way down through the lowest level of affiliated ball.
On the season, the Vanderbilt product has crushed 11 dingers to go along with a .258/.366/.592 line, seven steals, and a 32.4% strikeout rate that is both an improvement from years past, but also high enough to make you nervously bite your nails.
As he lights up Triple-A pitching, yet again, the Yankees have arrived at a crossroads where they must make a decision. They only have room for one young outfielder as they look towards the future, and they're going to have to choose between Jones and Dominguez.
The Yankees have to decide whether Spencer Jones or Jasson Dominguez is their future
New York has a crowded outfield with Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger signed long-term, and Trent Grisham here for 2026. The release of Randal Grichuk had opened up the fourth outfielder spot, which Dominguez had laid first claim to.
However, Dominguez's injury changes things, and while we've since learned he might have avoided an incredibly traumatic injury, he'll be laid up for a while with a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder. Just based on performance and proximity to the bigs, Jones is his logical replacement.
It's unfortunate that the Martian's shot at redemption got cut short, and it could be that the injury upends his entire Yankees future. If Jones performs well after his promotion, it could prove to be the differentiating factor between the two of them.
That might end up being for the best. With Grisham likely departing at season's end, the Yankees will need a replacement center fielder, and Dominguez's ongoing defensive woes almost make him a non-factor there.
Jones can play center, and he does it well. He also brings the same speed element to the table that Dominguez does. There's a case to be made that the best thing for the Yankees would be for him to Wally Pipp Dominguez, allowing them to then deal the Martian at the deadline to reinforce the big league roster.
However, if they're not sold on Jones, it would make sense to sell high on him and let another team roll the dice on baseball's biggest boom-or-bust prospect. But right now, it seems as if Jones getting his first taste of the bigs with Dominguez going on the IL would either give the Yankees a clue about his future fit with the team or improve his trade value leading up to the deadline.
One way or another, New York needs to decide which young outfielder is part of its future. The club only has room for one, and it would behoove them to capitalize on the odd man out's trade value before it turns to dust. Recent developments may have the deck shuffled in Jones' favor, and we'll be waiting with bated breath to see how they decide to proceed in light of Dominguez's injury. That could be the key to unlocking this mystery.
Either way, the silver lining of Dominguez's injury is that the Yankees got to avoid an uncomfortable situation with Jones buried at Triple-A with nothing left to prove at the level.
