Guardians announcer dissing Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. must've forgotten history

Maybe do a shred of research, pal?

The Guardians took the series opener from the Yankees on Tuesday night with Aaron Judge out of the lineup. Credit to Cleveland, though, they also pummeled Cam Schlittler, who had one of the worst starts of his career in the 9-4 loss.

Judge's surprise injury stole all the headlines and it was obvious the Yankees (and their fans) were a bit deflated with the reigning MVP out of the lineup. Still, New York held their own against one of the league's best pitching staffs. It was their pitching that failed them.

It didn't help that they went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, though, which has been a hallmark issue for the Yankees for quite some time. The Bombers missed two opportunities later in the game, with Jazz Chisholm Jr. striking out to end the fifth. Anthony Volpe was on second base hoping to score the tying run after the Guards has punched back.

Chisholm Jr. hasn't been spectacular this year, but he's been slowly figuring it out. He'll hopefully get there. And this week, he appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to promote his charity and talk some ball with the host, who is a big Yankees fan.

That, of course, put Chisholm Jr. in the crosshairs. He was asked if the Yankees could win the World Series, and what did you think he was going to say? Apparently expressing confidence in your team means you're an idiot. But the appearance itself was enough to fuel the haters, one of which was Guardians broadcaster Tom Hamilton.

Did Guardians broadcaster Tom Hamilton forget the Yankees own Cleveland?

Hamilton dished that shot at Chisholm in the second inning, seemingly unable to hold it in. Cringey stuff, especially when you consider all of these factors:

  • The Yankees own the Guardians and have booted them from the playoffs three times since 2020
  • The Guardians are the LAST team to criticize anybody about batting average. They were 29th in the league last year, 22nd in 2024, and rank 24th this year
  • Chisholm was on Fallon to talk about his charity that has given back to the New York area
  • Is there a famous Late Night Cleveland show? Has there ever been?

Once again, it's the lowest-hanging fruit for everybody. The Yankees do something, people who don't like the Yankees have something to say about it. Burn! Roasted! And of course, Guardians fans were smack talking the Yanks after a regular season win in which New York was missing their two best power hitters in Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Cute win, guys. You really got us.

Also, it's pretty surprising that anybody who roots for the Guardians would use batting average as a metric for success when this team has historically penny-pinched their way into the playoffs with controllable pitching, tight defense and good baserunning. Nice game plan, losers. Still doesn't get you to the World Series.

I don't know, maybe next time we can reference Chisholm's 92nd percentile OAA? That would be more fitting for what's successful in Cleveland, wouldn't it?
