Yankees SS/2B Gleyber Torres was sidelined for Thursday night’s game against the Blue Jays with a sore left shoulder. Torres is day to day and according to manager Aaron Boone, there’s a chance he could miss Friday night’s game in Cleveland as well.

Just a day before the Yankees were set to welcome back Didi Gregorius from the IL another infielder goes down with an injury in Torres. During this week’s series with the Blue Jays, Torres went 0 for 7 with 4 K’s and really didn’t look like himself so this might be the reason why.

Every player goes through mini funks over the course of a season but the at-bat quality from Torres wasn’t very pretty. Hopefully, this doesn’t lead to an IL stint for Gleyber and after a few days of rest, he can return to the lineup by the end of the weekend. That being said, if he doesn’t, placing him on the IL for a short 10-day stint wouldn’t be the worst thing.

Before Thursday’s game, Boone said the injury was the result of the wear and tear of the season and not from one play in particular. That’s good news but it seems like this could be an injury that lingers as we get deeper into the season so now might be a good time to rest him for a short period and let it fully heal.

If they went that route it would also delay the future problem the Yankees and Boone would eventually face of having to juggle a very crowded infield with Didi back. Now if Torres misses any more time, the Yankees certainly have the depth to replace him without it impacting them much both offensively and defensively. During Didi’s absence, Torres had been the Yankees primary shortstop with Gio Urshela at third and DJ LeMahieu at second so until he’s ready to return the only change they’d have to make is replacing him at short with Didi.

Again, we’ll have to wait and see if Torres can return on Saturday or Sunday but if he can’t another issue they won’t have to deal with is trying to find at-bats for the red-hot LeMahieu. That was a concern I know myself and many other Yankee fans had with Didi on the mend because there’s just no way, they can afford to sit their most consistent hitter on the bench.

Earlier this week Boone told reporters he has a plan to ensure LeMahieu starts six times a week by playing him all over the infield but that’s a lot easier said than done.
