Following some flat ground long tosses on Monday afternoon, Luis Severino reported discomfort in his throwing shoulder, convincing the Yankees to send him to New York to be evaluated by the team’s head doctor.

Prior to the Yankees bullpen blowing a 3-1 lead on Monday night, culminating in a 4-3 loss to the Astros, news broke that Luis Severino had suffered a setback in his recovery from a strained right rotator cuff.

While it’s too early to speculate as to the extent of Sevy’s predicament, the 25-year-old has yet to throw off a mound since sustaining the injury on March 5.

Following Monday’s abbreviated session at the Yanks’ minor league facility in Tampa, FLA, manager Aaron Boone reported that Severino “didn’t feel great,” and was heading back to New York to be evaluated by the club’s head doctor, Christopher Ahmad.

As Boone told the New York Post, things were looking positive just a few days ago.

"“A couple of days ago when he got [throwing] up to 130 feet was probably the best day he has had. [Monday] not as great, so we wanted to make sure. We are going to get him up to New York and get some answers.”"

Severino will undergo a magnetic resonance imaging exam on Tuesday, plus other tests if deemed necessary.

Although C.C. Sabathia could return this weekend following a five-game suspension stemming from last season, speculation is beginning to ramp up as to whether or not general manager Brian Cashman will soon reach out to former AL Cy Young Winner and current free agent Dallas Keuchel.

Though Keuchel is reportedly holding out for a deal similar to the one-year qualifying offer of $17.9 million he turned down from Houston this past winter, should Sevy be sidelined indefinitely, the Yanks would be wise to reach out the 33-year-old playoff tested innings eater.

While the potential addition of Keuchel could give the Yankees four left-handed starters, depending what happens with Sabathia and Gio Gonzalez (who has April 20 minor league opt-opt), Domingo German looked stellar on Sunday, keeping a no-hitter intact until the sixth inning.

Overall this season, the 26-year-old has allowed only two hits in 11 innings, going 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA, 0.909 WHIP and 8.2 K/9. If German can improve upon his 10:7 K:BB ratio, then perhaps the Yanks can lean on the exciting yet inconsistent righty moving forward.
