Though the Yankees fell to the Red Sox 11-6 on Thursday night, Luke Voit’s two-run, second inning blast put the club in the record books as the only team in MLB history to have 12 players hit at least 10 home runs in one season.

Sure it would have been nice to sweep the Red Sox at home — thus keeping them from popping champagne as AL East Division champions for at least another day, but it wasn’t in the cards for the Yankees during Thursday’s see-saw contest.

Despite losing a full game in the Wild Card standings, due to the Athletics thumping the Angels 21-3, the Bombers were able to set a brand new Major League Baseball record.

Luke “Strong like bull” Voit clobbered a two-run shot to straight-away center off of Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez. Voit’s 11th home run on the year was his 10th while wearing pinstripes, placing the 2018 Yankees in baseball lore as the first team in history to have 12 players hit at least 10 home runs in one season.

Interestingly enough, Tyler Austin, who was traded to the Twins on July 30th for pitcher Lance Lynn, had eight home runs in only 121 at-bats before being dealt. Austin has since added another eight round-trippers to his total in 92 at-bats for Minnesota. It’s amazing what players can do with consistent playing time, but I digress.

The 12 pinstriped record-setters include Giancarlo Stanton, who hit his 35th long ball of the season on Thursday — a grand slam; Aaron Judge (26 — imagine how many more he’d have had it not been for eight weeks on the DL), Didi Gregorius (26), Miguel Andujar (25 — your AL ROY front-runner), Aaron Hicks (24), Gleyber Torres (23 — his own DL stint robbed him of a potential 30-homer season), Gary Sanchez (16 — not bad for a real mess of a year), Brett Gardner (12), Greg Bird (11 — remember him?) and Neil Walker (10).

And although Andrew McCutchen has 19 home runs in 2018, 15 of them came as a member of the Giants.

Voit, who has played in just 30 games for the Yankees, and is hitting one home run for every 9.4 at-bats told ESPN’s Coley Harvey just how “cool” it is to be a part of such a powerful group.

"“It’s still pretty cool to be a part of that,” Voit said in the wake of an 11-6 loss, which gave Boston the AL East title. “It’s something to kind of take a positive from that game. No one else can say that they did that.”"

The Yankees have now hit 246 home runs this season, breaking their single-season record, set in 2012. As of today, the Yanks are projected to hit 263 homers, which would fall one shy of tying the all-time single-season record set by the Mariners in 1997.
