From Torreyes to Romine

As for the rest of the infield, I can also see the Yankees trading a fan favorite in Ronald Torreyes.

After having somewhat of a breakout season in 2017, filling in when injuries arose, Torreyes now sees himself at the bottom of the infield pecking order, which is filled with young talent.

Miguel Andújar and Gleyber Torres are both expected to see a decent amount of playing time. The addition of Brandon Drury also looks to lessen Torreyes’ playing time.

Toe should find himself riding the bench until injuries pop up. And don’t forget about the young Tyler Wade, who has yet to make a huge offensive impact for the Yanks but can play several positions.

While the Yankees are sound in the catcher department with Gary Sanchez behind the plate — having two defensively reliable backup catchers is not necessary.

Both Austin Romine and Kyle Higashioka are catchers better known for their capabilities behind the plate rather than at the plate. However, with defense being less important in baseball than in any other sport, these two will be fighting for playing time only when Sanchez is given the day off.

Last season, Romine was trusted with starting 62 games, in which he performed average at best for a defensive-orientated backup catcher. Having risen through the Yankees’ organization, Romine gained the trust of former Yankee manager Joe Girardi.

Now with Aaron Boone making the decisions for the Yankees, perhaps this could change.
