Waiting on Greg Bird

Along with an overfilled outfield in New York, especially with the addition of Giancarlo Stanton and Brandon Drury, and a young Clint Frazier looking to get some playing time, Ellsbury is not welcomed with open arms by Yankees’ fans.

But Ellsbury is the only major league outfielder I see the Bombers trading directly as a result of the other five being either superstars or future stars.

Moving to the infield, there is a possibility of the Yanks trading first baseman Tyler Austin. Although once ranked a top 100 prospect in the game by Baseball America, Austin is now 26- years-old and has yet to play more than 31 games in a single MLB season.

Arriving in the majors at age 24, Austin was a bit of a late arrival, who was pushed to the side by the overwhelming performances of other Yankee farmhands in Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez and Greg Bird. Now I know Bird has not performed at the same level as the other two mentioned, but Bird still holds the starting first baseman job. With Bird holding down the fort at first and a packed Yankee outfield, there does not seem to be room for an aging Austin who did not see an immediate impact in the Majors.

Perhaps on another team, he’d get a chance to shine, but here in the Bronx, Austin could be wasting some of his best, most productive years.
