The Yankees have rightly captured the Sunday headlines with their deal nabbing a frontline starter before anyone else. But who got the scoop? I mean the real scoop. Roll the credits………..
Earlier today the Yankees announced a deal with the Minnesota Twins that brings starting pitcher Jaime Garcia to the Bronx in exchange for prospects Dietrich Ens and Zach Littell. That much is fact.
What cannot be sorted out as fact, though, is who should be given credit for the breaking news story. But there’s a fix for that and MLB Trade Rumors has a fix on that.
You see, reporting on trades is like producing a Hollywood movie. You have the Producer, the big guy, but then you have all the Co-Producers with some money in the game, but not as much as the big guy.
So, in the beginning, or the end of a movie (I always like the end), they roll the credits listing all of the producers, big and small. Here then is the credit roll for the Garcia trade:
"Yahoo’s Jeff Passan first broke news that the two sides were moving toward a deal. MLB.com’s Jon Morosi first mentioned that Littell could be involved in the deal. ESPN’s Buster Olney tweeted that talks were at the “1-yard lins.” FanRag’s Jon Heyman tweeted that there was an agreement. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that Enns was also in the deal (Twitter link). Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN and MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand added details on the financial component (Twitter links)."
At first, I didn’t realize what I was reading when I first saw it. And then I realized, it’s come to this.
So, this got me to thinking that what I need to do is “break” a story, even if it isn’t a story, just in case it becomes a story later. That way, my name can be listed first when MLB.com rolls the credits. Here’s my breaking news story:
"Steve Contursi, writer and co-editor of Yanks Go Yard just Tweeted that the Dodgers and Yankees are in talks about a straight-up deal involving Clayton Kershaw and Aaron Judge. According to his sources, Conturai maintains that Kershaw is willing to waive his no-trade clause, but the Dodgers are asking also for Gleyber Torres. As of now, the Yankees are listening."

And I can say I have sources, even though I don’t because if anybody asks me about it, I can just point them to the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution where it says I have the right to protect the identity of my sources. How clean and neat is that?
I’m not claiming that any of my colleagues mentioned above were engaging in anything “sketchy,” and I appreciate the work they do, but you can see how easy it is to cross the tracks.
As I said earlier this morning, I can’t wait for this whole thing to just be done and over with at 4:00 P.M. EST tomorrow.
Now, let’s roll the credits for this one. I’d like first to recognize my loving wife who allows me to sit on the back deck pounding these keys on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon. And I’d also like to thank my dog, Bella, who accompanies me in this task by laying at my feet. Lastly, I’d like to thank the bottle of wine that is cooling in the refrigerator as I write these words.
Next: No rest for the weary, Here come the waiver deals
Which reminds me, it’s time to end this nonsense to check the Yankee’s live box score. Down 4-2. No worries though, we’ll be back.
