The Yankees dust off and move themselves on, but to where?

The Yankees can only do one thing right now, and that’s to play the next game on the schedule as hard as they’ve played all the others. A baseball season moves on and waits for no one.

The Yankees can sit around in their clubhouse in Houston and see Chris Carter putting a uniform on and wonder to themselves, “Hey, wait a minute. Didn’t we just dump him from the team a few days ago?” And they can sit there wondering what happened with Miguel Andujar, who set a Yankees record in his major league debut the other night?

Or, they can lament about the fact that they lost one of their Baby Bombers before he even got an at-bat in his debut with the team, the eleventh Yankee to don the Pinstripes so this season for the first time. Or maybe they caught some of the conversation between Joe Girardi and Gary Sanchez and are wondering to themselves, “Mmmm, what’s up with that?”

Or maybe they’ve witnessed the rash of hamstring injuries that have afflicted the team recently, and maybe they’re thinking they should kick their pre-game routine up a notch or two as a way of preventing them.

Or, it’s possible they notice the absence of Tyler Austin, who made a cameo appearance with the team this week. Or maybe they’ve read the reports about Greg Bird and his ongoing battle with an ankle injury, which even his manager now says, threatens the entire 2017 season.

Or……………..

The 25 guys assembled in the dugout look around and say, “Okay, we are the New York Yankees as of July 1, 2017” and leave it at that. Because although you need an App to know what the Yankees roster is composed of from day to day now, the fact is that they are all wearing a major league uniform and they have made it to this level for a reason.

The Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays (oh yes, don’t count them out) are waiting for no one, and they could give a hoot about however many injuries the Yankees have undertaken in the last few weeks.

To be sure, Brian Cashman is working overtime to shore up the team. Changes that hopefully translate into improvements will come. And once they start, they’ll happen quickly and voluminously as the Yankees are not about to let the opportunity presented to them to vanish into thin air without a fight.

But in the meantime, it’s the job of the 25 guys in the dugout tonight and beyond, or as long as it takes, to shore up their defenses until the calvary arrives. Holding steady is the name of the game right now. A six-game winning streak isn’t necessary, and a 5-5 over the next ten would be just fine.

But it’s always the old axiom in baseball that makes a season. The only game you can win is one you are playing tonight.
