The Yankees played a ballgame yesterday, and they won again. But you’d have to dig long and hard to find that news because the bigger story is that Alex Rodriguez is dating Jennifer Lopez (again).

This guy can’t seem to catch a break. Earlier today, a story written by my colleague, Mike Calendrillo was published by Yanks Go Yard in which the point is driven home that Alex Rodriguez is in the renaissance of a new career. Isn’t that enough and do we need all these People magazine stories about the man’s private life?

The Yankees Need A-Rod, And He Needs The Yankees

Been there, done it. Can we please move on? The Yankees have moved on, and they’ve put a team on the field this year that should captivate our attention, and there’s an even better team coming next season and the one after that.

Alex Rodriguez has moved on too, or at least he trying. He came into Spring Training and did a bang up job for the Yankees with the kids, and the Yankees liked what they saw so much that he’ll be back for two more days. He’s become a prized possession of FOX-TV as a broadcaster, and by all accounts, he’s taking an active interest in being a father for his daughters, something he could do when he was playing as much as he can now.

What more does the media want from the guy? He’s dating a celebrity. So what, he’s a celebrity. And except for the ones who buy People magazine, who cares?

Alex Rodriguez loves baseball far more than he loves Jennifer Lopez, or for that matter, any woman who has been or will be a part of his life. He’s a certified baseball nut who knows the game inside and out, and he can recall every pitch that he was thrown in the at-bat that led to his 600th home run or his first base hit in the majors.

There are those, and Yankees fans are among them, who believe that as A-Rod was riding in the limo on the way to his “date” with J-Lo that he sent a text to the Daily News letting them know, “Hey guys, have a cameraman at Restaurant X if you want a scoop”. In the old days, maybe so.

Isn’t Redemption Part Of The American Soul

Remember the worn cliche; actions speak louder than words. The man has already genuflected at the baseball altar seeking forgiveness with words. He was rejected and rightly so. But now, we are witnessing what my colleague called a “renaissance” in behavior. At least give him credit for that, and more importantly, can we give him credit for what he is doing for the Yankees these days.
