Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle is hearing rumors that the New York Yankees don’t see the San Francisco Giants as a good match for an Aroldis Chapman or Andrew Miller trade at the deadline.

At this point the majority of the contenders in the National League have been connected to one or both of the Yankees’ potentially available late inning relievers in the leadup to the August 1st trade deadline. The San Francisco Giants are no exception. In the beginning of June, Ken Rosenthal reported that the club had “discussed internally” a run at Andrew Miller.

Although the Giants entered the All Star break with a comfortable 6.5 game lead in the NL West, their bullpen has been a major liability in the first half, and it makes sense that they would attempt to address the problem at the deadline. Their relievers rank 27th in MLB with just 0.3 wins above replacement according to FanGraphs, and their 3.94 ERA puts them middle of the pack at 16th.

At the time, Rosenthal speculated 23-year-old starting pitcher Tyler Beede could be the return for Miller. The Giants’ 2014 first round draft pick was ranked second in their system before the season by MLB Pipeline and is having a nice year in Double-A, with a 2.57 ERA and 7.3 K/9 in 91 innings thus far.

On Monday, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle tweeted that his sources tell him the Yankees don’t see the Giants as a great trade match for either Miller or Chapman. Schulman named Giants’ number five prospect, 22-year-old first baseman/designated hitter Chris Shaw as a potential chip in a hypothetical deal.

That seems like a huge stretch given Shaw’s extreme struggles in the lower minors during his first two professional seasons. The 6’4 255 lb Shaw showed prodigious power in college, but has a .173/.226/.276 slash line in 168 PA. The Yankees have been asking for multiple blue-chip, MLB ready pieces in return for Miller. Shaw could be an interesting throw-in, but he’s not close to being a centerpiece.

These rumors could be the Yankees trying to get the Giants to include a stud like Beede in their offer, or even someone from their major league roster. Given San Francisco’s thin farm system, it makes sense that the Yankees don’t see them as a great fit for a Miller trade, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t get done if the Giants were motivated.
