New York Yankees Editorial: Vintage CC Sabathia Showed Up For a Night
Yes, it was against a team that is now 14.0 games back of the division lead, and yes it was against an offense that has been struggling all season long, but CC Sabathia turned the clocks back last night and gave us all a performance that made us all feel like it was 2009.
The 35-year old southpaw gave the Yankees six dominant innings against the Boston Red Sox, striking out eight while giving up just three hits, something he hadn’t done since April 2o14 before his microscopic season-ending knee surgery.
The biggest moment of his performance was undoubtedly in the top of the fifth inning, when he had a two out bases loaded showdown against David Ortiz. With the score tied at one, Sabathia cocked back and blew a 94-mph fastball right past not-so-big Papi, and the savvy veteran exploded on the mound in excitement, a spitting image that reminded all of us Yankee fans of 2009.
Sabathia’s efforts resulted in a no-decision, but thanks to his bases loaded magic and a Jacoby Ellsbury solo home run later on in the ball game, the Yankees went on to win 2-1 and managed to take another late season series against the Boston Red Sox, which was pivotal considering the second place Toronto Blue Jays are coming into town to take on the Yankees in a three-game split starting tonight at 7:05pm.
Sabathaia’s next start will likely come against the Cleveland Indians next week on the road. Let’s see if he can turn the clock back for a second straight start.
