Making your major league debut is usually a tall order for upcoming prospects, yet when the 21-year old Luis Severino pitches for the first time in Yankee stadium on Wednesday against the big bad Boston Red Sox, the pressure will be immense!

Severino has been ranked by multiple minor league platforms as the number one overall prospect in the entire Yankees organization for two straight seasons, and this year he put on an ever higher pedestal, as the Yankees refused to move him for big name starters like Cole Hamels, Johnny Cueto or even David Price.

As the Yankees sat back and watched teams around them upgrade significantly, namely the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals, it will be Luis Severino who the Yankees will look to as their integral upgrade as they gear up for the 2015 pennant race.

Is the 21-year old ready?

"“I don’t think he will get intimidated, it’s just a matter of location pitches and sometimes that takes time,’’ pitching coach Larry Rothschild said of Severino to George King III of the New York Post."

Severino wen’t an astounding 7-0 with a 1.91 ERA in 11 AAA starts to earn his call up. He’s pitched a combined 99.1 innings pitched so far this season between Scranton (AAA) and Trenton (AA), which is just 13.2 innings away from matching his career high of 113 innings pitched in 2014.

While most pitching prospects called up to the major leagues are usually on an innings limit, I don’t think this will be case for Severino. Length from the Yankees starting rotation has been a problem all year, and it’s gotten to the point where the Yankees bullpen is starting to look a bit fatigued. Andrew Miller already spent significant time on the DL, and the Yankees just lost Diego Moreno to elbow inflammation as of Sunday afternoon.

What are the Yankees expecting from Luis Severino?

I’ll put this as simply as possible, the Yankees are going to need Luis Severino not just to give them quality outings, but to also pitch really deep into ball games.

Severino already has three seven-inning starts under his belt in AAA, one of which was a 7.2 inning performance in which he struck out seven Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Phillies) batters.

Furthermore, to put it even more simple, the Yankees are looking at Luis Severino to be the second coming down the stretch. With Michael Pineda out a month, Masahiro Tanaka coming off a loss and health concerns lingering around Ivan Nova, the Yankees are in dire need an arm, and they need a very good one.

Wednesday should be very, very interesting.
