Yankees May Have To Spend Money To Make Money

The old adage is that you have to spend money in order to make money. For the Yankees, this may have to be the case. The Yankees haven’t made the playoffs since 2012. Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera aren’t walking through that door.  So what doe they have to do? Spend more money.

That means either getting Chase Headley and or Max Scherzer ino the fold. I get why they didn’t want to give Brandon McCarthy that fourth year. I get why they signed Andrew Miller and let David Robertson go. There isn’t a lot in the free agent market that fits and the trade market is complicated, because you’re going to have to give to get.

With Scherzer and Headley, it’s just money. Out of the two I’d rather have Scherzer.

The Yankees have too many holes in the rotation. Are Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia healthy? Can Adam Warren and David Phelps last the season? Can Michael Pineda be a 200 inning guy? Is Brian Mitchell a major leaguer?

Scherzer can be that guy that helps stabilize the rotation at the top. You don’t need to win 95 games anymore to make the playoffs. You need to get to 89. With the team focusing on run prevention, adding a Cy Young Award winner would help prevent runs, especially from an offense that may not exactly lead the league in anything.

If the team wants to make the playoffs and make that additional money, bringing in Scherzer or Headley would be the best way to get them there. Sometimes you gotta spend money to make money. The Yankees may have to as well.
