After losing the first two games down in Miami, the New York Yankees continued their four game series against the Miami Marlins at Yankee Stadium tonight. Michael Pineda (8-3, 3.54) took the mound trying to bounce back from a difficult outing and attempting to keep a Marlin offense in check that scored 12 runs the night before. Well, the Yankees starter did just that by giving up only one run in 6.2 innings as New York picked up the win by a final of 2-1.

Right out of the gate, New York got on the board first against Marlins rookie starting pitcher Jose Urena (1-3, 4.18). With one out in the inning, Chase Headley was hit by a pitch from Urena. After Brian McCann advanced Headley to second on a groundout, Alex Rodriguez lined a base hit to center that scored Headley and gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead.

In the fifth, New York would tack on another run. Headley would get it started with a one out single. Two batters later, A-Rod would single to center to put him three hits shy of 3,000 for his career and Garrett Jones drew a walk to load the bases. That set the stage for Carlos Beltran as he hit a single to center to score Headley. While Rodriguez was thrown out at the plate, the Yankees took a 2-0 lead.

Those would be all the runs that Michael Pineda would need. After showing some rust against the O’s, Pineda brought his A stuff to the mound tonight. He did not give up a hit thru six innings. However, in the seventh, Christian Yelich picked up the first Marlins hit with a solo shot to right center to cut the lead to 2-1.

After Pineda got Giancarlo Stanton to fly out to center and Marcel Ozuna to pop out, Joe Girardi took him out of the game for Chasen Shreve to face Justin Bour. Pineda went 6.2 innings, gave up one run on one hit, struck out nine, and walked two on 100 pitches (63 strikes) for the win. Shreve would strike out Bour to end the top of the seventh.

The Yankees would call on Justin Wilson to pitch the eighth, but he ran into trouble. After Adeiny Hechavarria drew a walk with one out, Ichiro Suzuki singled to right to put runners at the corners. Girardi would then go to Dellin Betances for a five out save after the right-hander hadn’t pitched since June 14.

Dee Gordon, the first batter Betances faced, would hit a ground ball right to Garrett Jones. Jones fired to the plate, but Hechavarria was ruled safe on the play at the plate. The play went under review and it was ruled that McCann did tag him out at the plate. Betances would get Derek Dietrich to fly out to right to end the top of the eighth.

In the ninth, Betances gave up a single to left to Marcell Ozuna and walked Bour with two outs. Even though the Marlins had the tying and winning runs on base, Betances would strike out Jeff Mathis to end the game. The Yankees closer had two strikeouts tonight, including getting Stanton to strike out swinging earlier in the inning. It was his fourth save of the season.
