Yankees Editorial: Are The Yankees Good Enough To Be World Series Or Bust?

One of the things that has made the Yankees, the Yankees, is the fact that every single year, they have a World Series or nothing mentality. They’ve only completed that goal once in the past 14 years, though they reached it two other times but came up short.

It appears that they again have this mantra.

"“That’s why we come to camp, that’s why we train, it’s the World Series, that’s our goal,’’ Girardi said. “To me it’s all or nothing. That’s why you play.’’"

For him and Brian Cashman it may be. This is a team that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2012. This is a team that is old in many spots and has a ton of money tied into three guys who are not what they once were.

It’s kind of hard when you have so much riding on one pitchers UCL, another’s knee, and another from not using pine tar when he pitches.

They are relying on an injury prone first baseman and rightfielder. A third baseman who had an amazing half of a season and not much with the stick since. A second baseman who didn’t hit last year. A guy who’s old and hasn’t played in over a year and a half in a game that counted.

The thing they have going for them is it’s possible their bullpen may be the best in the game. A loaded bullpen can get you places. Just ask the Kansas City Royals. Their defense should be excellent this year as well all over the diamond. Didi Gregorius has a cannon at short and it just a small example of that.

The division is wide open. Everyone has questions and everyone has strengths. Any of the five teams could win it and any of the five teams can fall flat on their face.

Instead of it being World Series or bust, it should be playoffs and hope.
