Yankees News: Yankees Sign Mat Gamel To Minor League Deal

Why not have one Gamel when you can have two. The Yankees drafted Ben Gamel in 2010. Gamel is an outfielder who’s in AA right now. He was kind of known as the other Gamel. His older brother, Mat Gamel, had been in the majors and tore his ACL twice and hadn’t been heard from again. Until now.

According to Baseball America’s Matt Eddy, the Yankees added the elder Gamel on a minor league pact.

Gamel was the 34th ranked prospect in the game according to Baseball America back in 2009. The Braves took a chance on Gamel last year but he didn’t play. In fact, he hasn’t even appeared in a minor league game since 2011

In 2012 for the Brewers, Gamel hit .246 with a homer and six RBI in 75 plate appearances.

I’m not sure where Gamel fits as a first baseman. Gregory Bird and Kyle Roller are at the high levels. He probably won’t be able to play third anymore after the surgeries. I guess DH duties and minor league depth are the reasons to add him. If he can show he can play first and they need it, maybe down the line they can call upon him, but probably not.

Good luck to Gamel on his comeback.
