O offense, where art thou?
Freddy Garcia had his first clunker as a starter for the Yanks in a 5-3 setback to the Blue Jays, but even in shitting the bed he was still pretty effective. He allowed 12 base runners in five innings but only three of them scored; he kept them in good position to win (it was 3-2 when he left). If the offense hadn’t gone 0-for-8 with RISP and stranded 11 runners, they probably would have won. Fabulous Freddy went five innings and gave up three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts to five walks. His streak of 14 scoreless [...]
Kindly disregard that last post
A few hours after I was bitching that the Yanks scored early and then not so much, the team exploded for 12 runs on 13 hits in a 12-3 rout of the ChiSox. The Yanks, who earned a split with the Southsiders, scored two runs in the third inning, sixth in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh. They really spread the runs around, which I told them to do…so you’re welcome. Also: Brett Gardner now has three times as many home runs as Carl Crawford and costs $14,327,642 less per year. Nick Swisher, who snapped [...]
Do the Yanks have a problem scoring runs late?
It seems like the 2011 Yanks score early in games and then have trouble scoring later on in the tilt. They do boast a 13-8 record, sit stop the division with a two-game lead and carry a +26 (114-88) run differential, so they’re by no means struggling. However, it’s a little frustrating to see them not producing late in games. I’d like to see the scoring spread out over all the innings, but runs are runs and I don’t care when they come as long as they come. The team has scored 76 of its runs this season between the [...]
Cy Colon
Eight innings pitched, seven hits, one run, six strikeouts, one walk and 99 pitches with 65 going for strikes. That is all. Bart retired eight in a row at one point and 11 of 12, he was absolutely filthy and even hit 96mph on his 94th pitch of the night. He got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the second inning en route to his longest outing since Sept. 22, 2007 with the Angels (8IP vs. the Ms). This guy has been a God-send for the rotation, and I only hope he can keep it up. Girardi on Colon: [...]
Yanks lose to Sox, at least they weren’t Red
The Yanks lost a tough one tonight to the Pale Hose, 2-0. Philip Humber took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but it was broken up by A-Rod. The kid, making his sixth start, was wheeling and/or dealing. Not much you can do about that. The Yanks offense was anemic, but AJ Burnett was lights out. He threw eight innings of three-hit, one-run ball with two strikeouts and two walks…but took the loss, his first in April as a Yankee (8-0, 4.00 ERA in 14 April starts as a Yankee coming in). AJ taking the loss was absolutely criminal; yet [...]
The new-look Orioles…
…look an awful lot like the Orioles of recent years — awful. They’re now back in the cellar of the AL East. They got absolutely manhandled by the Yanks in a 15-3 rout Saturday night. The Yanks, after playing just two games over the previous five days, posted season highs in hits (14), runs (15) and home runs (5). In fact, the team scored the most runs since a 20-11 romp of the Red Cox on August 21, 2009. They were crushing the ball. This one was never really close as the Yanks scored three in the first inning — [...]
O’s Series Preview
As the Yanks and Orioles prepare to do battle in Baltimore this weekend, Lauren Tilley, lead writer at Birds Watcher, was nice enough to join me in doing a series preview. Check it out after the jump.
News and notes from yet another off day
Nobody likes when their team doesn’t have a game scheduled, but two off days in the span of four days is maddening. I don’t know what to do with myself. Sure there’s other games to watch, but there’s nothing quite like seeing a Yankee game. Anyway, here’s some news and notes regarding the team:
Happy birthday Hitman!
On Don Mattingly’s 50th birthday, the Yanks avoided another ninth-inning meltdown and beat the Blue Jays, 6-2. There were many deserving candidates for player of the game, but this one belongs to Cy Colon. Bart, making his first start since July 24, 2009, threw 6 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts to two walks. The 37-year-old threw 89 pitches, with 56 going for strikes, and retired 12 in a row at one point. In doing so, he notched his first win since May 26, 2009 against the Angels when he was with the [...]
Yanks/Jays series preview
As the Yanks head north of the border for a two-game set with the Blue Jays, my man Jared McDonald of Jays Journal joined me to do a series preview. Toronto Blue Jays 2011 Regular Season Record: 7-9, T-2nd in A.L. East (3.0 GB) New York Yankees 2011 Regular Season Record: 9-5, 1st in A.L. East (0.0 GB) Pitching Matchups
