Yankees vs. Braves Rain Delay, August 7: updates, start time, full details

For the second consecutive home game - with an off day sandwiched in between like a grotesque oreo - the New York Yankees will be delayed by incoming weather. Ideally, the game we're finally treated to against the Atlanta Braves tonight goes a little better than Wednesday's slog against the St. Louis Cardinals, when every Yankees fan stayed up an hour later than expected just to watch a feckless offensive effort and a 3-1 loss.

About 51 minutes before the official "This game will not start on time..." siren went off, beat writer Bryan Hoch laid the groundwork, noting that a significant thunderstorm was poised to roll through around the time of a scheduled first pitch. For reference (from the author's perspective), that storm hit New Jersey around 6:00 PM EST, right around the moment of the Yankees' announcement. The rain hit fervently; a delay is a great idea while we sort this whole thing out.

Much like Wednesday's action, there shouldn't be a threat of cancellation here - which is great, because Saturday's Old-Timers' Day ceremony presents another timing snafu.

Saturday's ceremony is scheduled for 1:00 PM EST, with gates opening at the Stadium at noon. The game between the Yankees and Braves - Chris Sale vs. Gerrit Cole, true to form - is slated for 3:00 PM EST. It's a long day at the ballpark by any stretch, and turning it into a mid-afternoon/night doubleheader with split admission sounds less than ideal.

Expect the Yankees and Braves to soldier on through the sog on Friday night until they can reach first pitch, which will be thrown by Max Fried against the team he defected from in free agency last winter. Tyler Mahle will make his Braves debut in this one after coming over from the Giants at the trade deadline. Most Braves fans weren't thrilled by his addition, and he hasn't gotten much time in the lab to work on reshaping anything.

Diehard Yankee fans know that, with this offense, that's a fairly meaningless observation, though. Stay tuned. Perhaps tonight is the night they score on something other than a home run for the first time in 40 innings (not a joke).
