Yankees Rumors: Padres trade buzz suggests expanded deal with NYY under consideration

The New York Yankees have been connected to Mason Miller in trade rumors for weeks now, but it's never truly felt the San Diego Padres were willing to move off of their All-Star closer. They traded for his last deadline and surrendered one of the best prospects in the game for Miller. Even if they were in worse shape, you need to at least see another year of the right-hander.

Miller has been the most recognizable name in Padres trade rumors, but many other players seem to be available. Former Yankee Wandy Peralta is one. Lefty reliever Adrian Morejon is another. Moving the contract of Xander Bogaerts was another possibility previously floated.

San Diego has a bloated payroll and are in the midst of an ownership transition. Almost anything could be on the table for them ahead of the Aug. 3 deadline, which has Yankees fans pondering even more after a recent rumor.

According to Padres insider Kevin Acee, San Diego is "showing interest" in Yankees starts Will Warren and Ryan Weathers. But what does that mean?

Possible Yankees-Padres trade deadline deal could feature multiple big names

In no world are Warren or Weathers among the headliners in a Miller package, especially after what Tarik Skubal went for on Saturday night. In no world are Warren or Weathers among the headliners in a Morejon/Peralta package, either. One is too light, the other is too heavy.

But what about an expanded package? Is there a combo deal being discussed involving Bogaerts? Michael King? Fernando Tatis Jr.? Those are just about the only other players the Yankees should be interested in if talks progressed (and by no means are we suggesting they're attainable or even available).

In a world where the Yankees are taking on a few rentals and a larger commitment (whether it's Miller's team control that will get very expensive in arbitration or the remaining money owed to Bogaerts/Tatis Jr.), Warren and/or Weathers are the appropriate starting point (followed by a package of prospects, obviously).

Or maybe this is the cost for an elite rental reliever like Morejon. Maybe the Padres value Warren/Weathers more than Yankees fans do. We currently have no idea. And nobody thought Skubal would go so soon and for that light of a package.

Clock's ticking. Keep a bigger Yankees-Padres trade on your radar, it's very much a possibility after New York lost the most win-now option.
