Projecting a Yankees-Padres Mason Miller trade package after latest buzz

We've spoken about how Mason Miller's dominance should have Brian Cashman and the New York Yankees thinking bigger at this year's trade deadline. It's rare that, after missing out on a blue-chip talent, a general manager gets another bite at the same apple, but that's where we are with the Yankees and Miller as we hurdle towards the Aug. 3 trade deadline.

The level of interest New York has in Miller is well-known, but Joel Sherman's recent report that the Padres had scouts at "literally every level" of the Yankees organization proves that AJ Preller is readying himself for negotiations with Cashman.

Landing Miller would allow the Yankees to create the sort of super bullpen they haven't had in some time, but what could a realistic trade package look like? We have a few clues as to what could get the job done.

A deal for Miller is going to hurt, but the Yankees do have the talent to get the job done. Moreover, they'll still have chips left over to then go out and get solutions for other key needs.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that the starting point in Miller talks is expected to be two top-100 prospects, and this deal accomplishes that goal. Dax Kilby ranks No. 58 on MLB Pipeline's top 100, while Elmer Rodriguez comes in at No. 73.

The Padres are also thought to want young, controllable starting pitching. They desperately need it, too, as injuries and ineffectiveness have their starting rotation ranked 26th in ERA with a 4.67 mark through July 27, which is a big reason that their playoff hopes have squirted away. This deal gives them that in spades, with Will Warren and Elmer Rodriguez giving them the potential to have a couple of quality mid-rotation arms for years to come, and Ben Hess shouldn't be that far behind them either.

The Padres might want George Lombard Jr. in the deal, but if the Yankees are giving up so much pitching talent, they might as well draw a line in the sand and take him off the table. Lombard Jr. could be a big league solution for New York this year, though it seems the club is backtracking on that stance. Regardless, the Padres are said to have asked about Kilby specifically, so he should be a suitable alternative.

Even as proposed, Preller could come back asking for more. If that's the case, the Yankees might be forced to throw in rising star Wilberson De Pena, too. De Pena has taken a massive leap this year, but as a relatively unheralded IFA who signed for just $50,000 back in 2024 and came over in the Oswald Peraza swap last deadline, the 19-year-old is still very much a lottery ticket.

This is costly, but necessary given the three additional years of control Miller comes with. It is also a package that solves San Diego's critical needs while providing the requisite upside to convince them to pull the trigger. It'd be hard for another team to top this offer, so if Cashman offers this or something very similar, he should land Miller.
