We warned ya! And they did it again! The New York Yankees have promoted and demoted Jorbit Vivas for an entire series only for the top prospect to not see a single inning of action. And they could've utilized him to give breathers to a few other guys.
Though, we will say, they were trying to avoid the sweep on Wednesday, so the fact they put themselves in that position subtracted a game Vivas could've played in. They weren't going to make the lineup weaker if they didn't have to.
But what about Monday and Tuesday? Both Anthony Volpe and Jazz Chisholm came into this series struggling to make contact (and that continued). There was a perfect opportunity to give either one an extra day off this week in the midst of a 13 games in 13 days stretch and plug in Vivas, who could play second or third.
And even if Boone didn't want to bench those guys, is the world really going to crumble if Oswaldo Cabrera gets a night off? He's now appeared in seven straight games. He's been hitting the ball nicely, but he's the No. 9 hitter.
Perhaps this is nitpicking, but we're more so of the idea that it's unfair and disrespectful to Vivas, who deserves a chance after tearing up Triple-A to begin the year.
Yankees didn't allow Jorbit Vivas to make his MLB debut ... again
Now Trent Grisham will return from the paternity list and Vivas will head back to Scranton after receiving three days off. Hope that doesn't affect how he was performing, considering he's hitting .343 in 20 games! Wouldn't have that helped the big league roster if he provided a bit of a spark?
On Monday, the Yankees were blanked through six innings and logged just three hits before finally scoring in the seventh. On Tuesday, the final 16 Yankees batters combined recorded just a single hit. The offense was much better on Wednesday, but even so, Chisholm, Volpe and Cabrera went a combined 1-for-12 with seven strikeouts.
The offense is far from perfect. It may be one of the best in the league, but it's not balanced and there's plenty of room for improvement. Would Vivas have immediately improved the problem areas? We have no idea. But the Yankees had an early-season opportunity to see, and they chose not to, hitting fans with deja vu from mid-July of last year when they were in an even more dire situation and opted to do the same exact thing with Vivas.
