At this moment in time, the New York Yankees will be without one of their hottest hitters after a Monday roster move. Outfielder Trent Grisham was placed on the paternity list, which will be a notable short-term loss for the lineup.
Grisham is hitting .320 with a 1.093 OPS in 20 games so far and has dazzled with the glove in what has been a surprising rebound from his underwhelming 2024 campaign. His power has been unbelievable as well — only Aaron Judge has more homers than him on the team.
In his place, the Yankees have called up top prospect Jorbit Vivas, who will hopefully see some time on the field after the team's bizarre treatment of him last year.
Vivas, who is hitting .343 with a .925 OPS across 20 games with Triple-A Scranton, was promoted last July when JD Davis hit the injured list. Right after the move, Aaron Boone told reporters there would be "no guarantees" for Vivas, which was the understatement of the century, as the young slugger sat on the bench for the entirety of the series against the Baltimore Orioles before being sent back down.
Yankees better give Jorbit Vivas a chance this April in short cameo replacing Trent Grisham
Fans rightfully wondered what the point of that was, but they were, of course, never given an answer. At the time, the Yankees badly needed somebody to fill infield reps in a capable manner, unlike the current situation with Jazz Chisholm and Oswaldo Cabrera performing nicely.
Perhaps there's a way for Boone to find reps for Vivas against the Guardians now that we can expect some maneuvering in the DH spot (or Jazz/Oswaldo potentially getting some outfield reps with the Yankees down to three true outfielders).
Vivas, 24, must have the opportunity to make an impression sooner rather than later. He's 24 years old and already has 139 games at Triple-A under his belt. With Pablo Reyes hardly contributing, DJ LeMahieu still on the IL, and no other viable options to reliably handle second and third base, Vivas could become a valuable depth player as 2025 progresses.
But again, he'll need run to prove that. Let's hope Boone can make things right after the team deprived him of his MLB debut last year.
