Ever since former New York Yankees right-hander Sonny Gray was traded to the Boston Red Sox in November, Yankees fans — with popcorn in hand — have been enthralled by Gray's Boston tenure.
As soon as Gray put on that Red Sox cap, he decided to publicly shame the Yankees as a franchise he never wanted to play for. Social media collectively roasted Gray for this fake trash talk, and Yankees general manager Brian Cashman also stepped out into the spotlight to remind us all that Gray is a liar. Yankees fans were thrilled.
What's followed since then in Gray's Red Sox career has been even more joy-inducing for Yankees Nation. Gray himself has been very solid on the mound this season, but Boston is limping along to the worst Red Sox season in over six decades.
The Red Sox have arguably the worst offense in Major League Baseball, and Boston is headed towards a surefire fire sale at the trade deadline. Gray's name has popped up in plenty of rumors, along with guys like Aroldis Chapman and Jarren Duran.
Ex-Yankees pitcher Sonny Gray is a likely Red Sox trade chip
How does Gray feel about the prospect of getting traded? It doesn't sound like he would mind it at all. Gray said this past week about his Red Sox team that, "We're not good ... we're just not a good team right now, and that's just a fact."

It's a delectable irony for Yankees fans to soak in: Gray, mere months removed from advertising his distaste for having played for the Yanks, is now openly advertising his desire to ditch the Red Sox. Only a few days after Gray's aforementioned quote went viral, he provided another soundbite to The Boston Globe's Tim Healey that further solidified his stance on getting traded. Gray told Healey that he'd be "open for a conversation" about getting moved at the deadline.
It sounds like something I might say after someone offered me a bacon cheeseburger at the end of a 48-hour fast. I'd be open for a conversation about that burger.
Sonny Gray's bad karma placed him on the worst Red Sox team in the modern era
All Gray had to do when he signed with the Red Sox was dutifully go about his offseason training program and hold a respectful welcome interview. Instead, Gray decided to slam the Yankees organization the first chance he got in front of a Zoom camera. It was a completely unprompted and unnecessary move from Gray that clearly stemmed from his resentment towards the Yanks, who are, by the way, currently the best team in the American League.
Contenders across the league will be interested in Gray if he's made available, and Yankees fans couldn't be happier that the Red Sox are just weeks away from tearing up the plan they thought they masterfully crafted before the 2026 season began.
