Sonny Gray is getting absolutely dragged on social media for fake Yankees trash talk

It wasn't enough for Sonny Gray to simply join the New York Yankees' greatest rival, the Boston Red Sox; he also felt the need to disparage the Yanks in an introductory Zoom interview with Boston, saying he "never wanted" to play for the Yankees, in the first place (per MLB Network).

Gray's comments were consumed with immense delight by Red Sox fans, of course, but Yankees fans weren't even upset; more so, confused. This is because Gray has repeatedly said in the past that he, in fact, did enjoy (and even "love") his stint with the Yankees. He's on camera saying these things not along ago, on multiple occasions.

In 2020, Gray issued some heartfelt remarks describing how he loved New York and that it was a "great part" of his MLB journey, despite the Yankees trading Gray to the Cincinnati Reds in 2019.

Gray's sudden hatred for the Yankees is also curious given his documented affinity for the 2009 Yanks, as captured in The Player's Tribune.

"I couldn’t be happier," Gray told the Tribune shortly after getting traded to the Yankees in 2017. "One of the baseball teams that really meant something to me growing up was the 2009 Yankees – the World Series winner, with CC and A.J. Burnett at the top of the rotation ... I just remember loving to watch that Yankees team."

Yankees fans were keen to point out the above comments when they saw Gray conveniently sporting a Red Sox-inclined 2007 World Series hat during his latest Zoom interview (Gray admitted that he purchased the hat shortly after his deal with Boston was finalized).

The digital footprint doesn't end there for Gray, with the New York Post recently sharing a poignant snippet from his introductory Yankees press conference, in which Gray described that he "couldn't be happier" and "had a big smile" on his face when the Yankees deal officially went through.

With all of this footage out in the open, Gray's new opinion of the Yankees just makes him look petty and unprofessional. We get it: things didn't work out in the Bronx, and it may have been due to the Yankees' staff mishandling Gray. That's a narrative that's been discussed openly by former Yankees catcher Erik Kratz in defense of Gray, and it's valid.

So, why the continued Yankees-inspired vitriol from Gray? It does something to feed into the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry, sure, but it does nothing for Gray, whose latest expressions of excitement about joining the Sox can't be trusted. After all, he once felt that way about the Yankees.
