The Mets have been, pound for pound, the worst team in MLB this season, but of course they found life before taking on the Yankees in this weekend's Subway Series. A sweep of the lowly Detroit Tigers has them back on track as fans rediscovered a shred of confidence on social media.
After Thursday's victory over Detroit, in which top prospect AJ Ewing hit his first career home run, Juan Soto spoke to the media and was asked about the performance of the team's young players. Nolan McLean also started the game and got the win despite giving up a three-run homer in the first inning.
Soto doubled down on his previous assertion that he signed with the Mets because of their promising farm system and the fact they were built for the long haul, coinciding nicely with his 15-year contract.
When he said that the first time, just about everybody laughed. Baseball fans know very well how the Mets' luck pans out with top prospects, and it was also very clear the Yankees and Dodgers were far better equipped for both the short- and long-term. That's not a dig, either. Both of those teams made the World Series months prior to Soto's decision.
Truth be told, Yankees fans haven't been thinking about Soto or the Mets ... until Mets fans make us. Which is exactly what happened on Thursday when Evan Roberts of WFAN brought Yankees fans into a conversation they never had interest partaking in.

Yankees fans come out in full force to squash ridiculous online Juan Soto discourse
Literally ... nobody cares. The Yankees moved on from this almost immediately when they got off to a fast start in 2025 and then watched the Mets' historic collapse from afar. Whenever there's a Mets-Yankees conversation that explodes on Twitter, it's usually the result of Mets fans unreasonably calling out the performance of good Yankees players or trying to puff out their chest regarding Clay Holmes' performance.
Again, things we don't care about! We only did in the initial aftermath of Soto's departure and disingenuous commentary. Nobody outside of Queens is paying attention to what Juan Soto is saying after the Mets notched a win to improve to 18-25.

We wouldn't mind getting the last word, though. The Yankees have Ben Rice and Cam Schlittler as MVP and Cy Young frontrunners right now. They're making everybody forget about the stink of Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells.
Not to mention, Spencer Jones is getting his first taste of MLB action, Elmer Rodriguez made his debut and looked solid, and George Lombard Jr. and Carlos Lagrange are one step away from The Show.
Could it all turn on a dime? Sure. Not out of the realm of possibility. But the Yankees are 27-17 with an objectively better infrastructure while the Mets are protesting the existence of David Stearns every day. You tell us who has it better.
