New York Yankees top prospect George Lombard Jr. dropped out of Sunday afternoon's MLB Futures Game at All-Star Weekend, presumably because of his sprained fingers. Initially, the Yankees had two players slated to participate, but the Injury Bug wiped out both Lombard Jr. and Carlos Lagrange. Of course ... it is notable that Lombard Jr.'s brother Jacob was projected to go close to the top of Saturday's first round. Is it possible that the brothers just wanted to be together for this momentous event?
Add in some recent Brian Cashman quotes, calling Lombard Jr. someone who "might be a choice at some point in the second half," and it certainly seemed like his health was coming together at the right time.
Eagle-eyed Yankees Twitter doctors got their first look in a while at Lombard Jr.'s "rehab" on Saturday when cameras panned to Jacob and George celebrating together. Maybe things will turn out alright after all.
Didn’t see any sort of wrap on George’s hand at the clip of his brother’s watch party 👀

Jacob Lombard drops in MLB Draft, but lands perfectly into George's (healed?) hands with Miami Marlins
Lombard and Lombard have made it clear they dream of sharing a field together someday. For now, it'll have to happen during an interleague matchup between the Yankees and Marlins.
The younger Lombard, who can play anywhere from shortstop to center field someday, was projected as high as fourth overall to the Giants, just outside of the ironclad top three. Instead, the Giants selected the draft's first pitcher - UC Santa Barbara's Jackson Flora - and Lombard, a pricey high school target, had to wait around a little bit.
Ultimately, it worked out for the best; the Lombards played high school ball at Gulliver Prep in Miami. Though George Sr. and Jr. will both be on the road with the Tigers and Yankees (farm teams) respectively, he'll get a taste of home and comfort as he works his way through the Marlins' system, with the assurance that his big-league goals are just down the road.
The next headlines the Lombard family might be making after Saturday's showcase? A Yankees stretch-run call-up (as long as there really is no hand wrap to speak of).
