Yankees fans waited over 24 hours to get an injury update on top prospect George Lombard Jr., who left Tuesday night's game with an apparent hand injury after attempting to tag out a runner stealing second base.

He grabbed his hand immediately in pain and departed shortly after. The video suggested it could have been something serious, which was a major concern because of the strides he had been making at Triple-A.

After the Yankees' Wednesday night win over the White Sox, the team revealed Lombard Jr. suffered two sprained fingers on his left hand and tests came back negative. Not sure why it took that long to let everybody know the tremendously good news, but the Yankees' injury situations right now are particularly bad.

It's unclear if Lombard Jr. will miss time, but this hardly affects his 2026 trajectory. Two sprained fingers on his non-throwing hand was probably the next best outcome aside from "no injury at all."

George Lombard Jr.'s injury isn't serious, and he could still debut for the Yankees in 2026

In the short term, this will obviously impede Lombard Jr. with his bat. His grip will be affected depending on the swelling, so it probably makes sense for the Yankees to rest him through the weekend to avoid any nonsense.

At the same time, Anthony Volpe is back to making (some) fans believe again. Over his last four games, he's 7-for-16 with five runs scored, four RBI, two walks and only two strikeouts. His defense has also looked good. It's long been speculated if Lombard Jr. comes up to the active roster, it will be at the expense of Volpe's playing time.

That said, we are still very far away from such a reality. Lombard Jr. needs at least another month in Triple-A to prove he can handle MLB pitching. As for Volpe, there's still plenty of time for him to revert back to his frustrating ways and restart the conversation about his contributions on a World Series hopeful roster.

Whatever ends up happening, at least fans know there's still an organic path ahead. Both players will need to produce between now and the trade deadline (or when rosters expand on Sept. 1) before a serious decision is made. And at the end of the day, it's great news for the Yankees that Lombard Jr. is healthy and Volpe is performing.
