Tough news, Yerry De Los Santos. You've been demoted from the New York Yankees' Opening Day roster to make room for the acquisition of Ryan Yarbrough.
Anyhow, now that we've got that out of the way, here are 38 individual Injured List stints to roll out before first pitch!
While not quite that extreme, and not exactly packed with surprises, the Yankees' list of IL placements to open the new 2025 season became official on Wednesday evening, and reads like a scroll of decrees from someone trying to create a new Constitution.
Thankfully, there weren't any surprising splashes or bombs dropped. Rather, Yankee fans received the starkest reminder possible that they suffered through a winter/spring from hell, losing Giancarlo Stanton, Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, and a cavalcade of relievers. The only way this could've been more painful is if they'd randomly included Juan Soto (Mets).
Earlier today, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
— New York Yankees (@Yankees) March 26, 2025
• Optioned RHP Yerry de los Santos to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
• Placed RHP Clayton Beeter on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 3/24) with right shoulder impingement syndrome.
• Placed RHP JT Brubaker on…
Yankees Injured List drop ranges from Giancarlo Stanton to Clayton Beeter, and everyone in between
Surprises here? Yeah, we've got a few. Jonathan Loaisiga was widely expected to be placed on the 60-Day IL to clear up space. Perhaps his rehab's going better than expected, or maybe the Yankees just wanted to give themselves some procedural wiggle room. Same with Stanton and Beeter, who both seemed to be out indefinitely based on the most recent comments from the team.
The bad news? Cole and Gil don't appear, seeing as they'll be hitting the 60-Day IL shortly to clear up 40-man spots, but neither does Jake Cousins. Cousins wasn't mentioned in Wednesday morning's wide-ranging injury update, either. Does this mean he's suffered a setback, possibly one of the surgical variety? The curveball-slinging righty was highly valuable last season, and just because the Yankees technically have the depth to cover for him doesn't mean they want to.
The Yankees still have a full roster to drop within the next ~20 hours, so we're expecting to get a final resolution on Oswald Peraza, Pablo Reyes, Brent Headrick, and a possible external bench addition/right-handed bat. That's where the real surprises will show up.
On the other hand, the IL announcement was inevitable, but it's still noteworthy how many scrolls it took to get to the bottom on a standard iPhone screen.
