Yankees dealt horrible Field of Dreams reminder after latest White Sox news

MLB hasn't played an official regular-season Field of Dreams game since 2022, when the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs pulled off a turn-of-the-century throwback that ... wasn't good enough to make people forget about the Yankees-White Sox instant classic (depending on where you're from) that had taken place the previous summer.

This week, the league's stars are returning to the cornfield, where the Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins will square off on Netflix. As if that wasn't already enough of a reason for Yankee fans to shield their eyes, expecting reminders of a nationally televised night gone wrong, Tim Anderson just announced his retirement, making a flurry of upcoming lowlights the lock of the century.

Anderson, who brought both batting average and swagger back to the White Sox during their previous era of ascendancy, hadn't been the same since 2023, cameoing in 31 Angels games last season before officially hanging them up on Monday, reading the writing on the wall.

He'll forever be associated with the Yankees for two reasons — one incredibly unsavory, and one that left our shoulders sunken. It was Anderson who Josh Donaldson targeted with a racial taunt on a random May day in 2022, when everything was going fine and absolutely nobody needed this. It was bafflingly unnecessary and inscrutable then and remains so to this day. Donaldson never should've sniffed the field again, but he just kept sniffing it.

And it was Anderson, one year prior, who zipped up a Yankees comeback for the ages, reversed it, and tossed it into an Iowa trash bin. I will not be linking the highlight here. I will merely be describing it. I am a nice guy.

Tim Anderson's retirement brings back horrible Yankees memories

It's become core Yankees lore that the Aaron Boone edition of this team cannot win in nationally televised showcase games. This has been codified as fact mostly because of the unit's playoff failures from 2018-present, but it does feel like they're also allergic to FOX — and that probably mostly stems from the residual effects of Anderson's home run.

If you stuck around for all three hours and 30 minutes of baseball after the pageantry subsided, you saw a gassed and incapable Andrew Heaney turn a 3-1 lead into a 5-3 deficit instantaneously in the third inning. It was pushed to 7-3 in the fourth, and the Yankees tightened it only slightly to 7-4 before the ninth.

Liam Hendriks — not abnormal for him against the Bombers — blew the save. But he didn't just blow it; he was devoured by titans, as Aaron Judge hit a two-out, two-run shot, Joey Gallo took a walk (2021 vibes!), and Giancarlo Stanton mashed a blast as well, flipping the scoreboard.

If only Zack Britton, who didn't like to close and was fading that summer, could've secured three more outs.

Instead, with one out, Seby Zavala walked and Anderson finished the game off, flipping the manual scoreboard once again with a walk-off home run. It was yet another entry into the insanely overflowing book of "Not Quite!" losses by the 2021 Yankees, a team that provided more day-to-day torture than any other playoff team in the history of the game (if you count an awful one-game cameo in the postseason as a "playoff team"). Tim Anderson got the moment in time instead, and he rode it towards beloved status on the Southside of Chicago. Good for him, but the timing of this announcement all but insures the worst non-World Series moment of the past five years will be replayed ad nauseam on Netflix this week. Cancel your subs!
