UPDATE: Domínguez needs more imaging in New York after his first round of X-Rays, according to the Yankees, which is rarely good.
Timing is everything, and unfortunately, Jasson Domínguez's timing has been horrendous - for reasons beyond his control - almost every step of the way during his major league career.
Domínguez burst onto the scene at the end of 2023 - but it was a lost season, and the Yankees had no designs on contending. His explosive debut was cut short anyhow by an elbow injury that ultimately required Tommy John surgery. Down on the farm in 2024, he was unable to rise to the bigs and grab a midsummer opportunity because of unrelated injury troubles.
When the Yankees lost Giancarlo Stanton this year for his annual soft tissue troubles, promoting Domínguez - red hot and laying waste to Triple-A - was an obvious silver lining. His defense still needed work, and minor-league reps could've aided him in his quest to become more than a DH, but it was pretty clear the bat would play at the MLB level immediately, and every AB against inferior pitching was a wasted one.
Facing a corresponding roster move for Elmer Rodriguez's elevation on Wednesday, the Yankees doubled down on Domínguez, DFA'ing veteran outfielder Randal Grichuk and extending his run.
Of course - of COURSE - Domínguez was struck on the elbow by a Nathan Eovaldi fastball and, after flexing for a while and staying in the game to run, departed in the bottom of the fourth inning, replaced by utility man Max Schuemann.
Max Schuemann is now entering the game in left field for Dominguez in the bottom of the fourth. https://t.co/vVSsy3IxWj

If Domínguez is seriously injured, the Yankees don't have a viable fourth outfielder to replace him - unelss, of course, Grichuk circulates all the way back around?
Yankees' next steps become cloudy after depressing Jasson Domínguez injury exit
Domínguez's pause with the trainers was extensive. He passed the grip test enough to be cleared to race the bases, but clearly the Yankees didn't get all the data they needed and decided to pull him from the game (almost surely against his will). To think that we were all worried about Trent Grisham banging into the fence last night when we should've been worried about a freak Domínguez accident instead. Of course we should've.
Anthony Volpe can theoretically return to take his place, but unless the Yankees want to press the bold Spencer Jones button, Domínguez doesn't have a clear replacement. He was the Triple-A outfielder who deserved a chance. Hopefully, the Sports Gods will allow him to shake this off and receive what he's owed.
