The Yankees are currently in hell with the standing Kyle Tucker contract offers

This can only end painfully for the Yanks.

Remember when Kyle Tucker was reported as being the New York Yankees' "backup plan" to Cody Bellinger? Well, Tucker's leaked offer from the New York Mets (reportedly in the realm of $50 million AAV) just exposed that idea as impossible (sorry, Jon Heyman). But hey, maybe Bo Bichette is now the Yankees' new Bellinger "backup plan," replacing Tucker (Heyman again, wink-wink)!

It was beginning to feel weird that the Yankees were entirely silent on the Tucker front, but now we know the numbers behind the disinterest. This could mean a couple of different things for New York's ongoing pursuit of Bellinger (which includes a $155-$160 million final offer). Tucker, meanwhile, isn't necessarily done tormenting the Yankees, even if he's no longer on their radar. That's because the two teams who are reportedly still in on Tucker are bitter Yankees rivals: the Mets and Toronto Blue Jays.

Yankees fans are in pain over Kyle Tucker's contract offers from the Mets and Blue Jays

The Mets-Tucker news (provided by FanSided's MLB insider Robert Murray) stole the headlines on Tuesday, and what got lost in the shuffle is that four hours after Murray's report, ESPN's Jesse Rogers revealed that the Blue Jays also have an offer on the table for Tucker. This is the culmination of an offseason's worth of Blue Jays-Tucker buzz, during which Toronto's always felt like the only club interested in giving him a long-term deal.

Toronto's Tucker offer is indeed a long-term one (reportedly), although specific financials aren't known. This means that Tucker ostensibly has two roads diverging for him to choose from. He can choose the long-term situation he's sought since the start of free agency, or he can take the short-term, high AAV alternative. One has to assume that Toronto's long-term offer doesn't approach the $400 million figure that Tucker's camp has been shooting for since November (otherwise, he'd have signed last night, no?). This is where the appeal of the Mets deal comes into play (and perhaps keeps the Los Angeles Dodgers in the running, too).

Of course, none of this is exactly heartwarming news for the Yankees, who are watching two of their adversaries compete for the biggest fish remaining on the market ... all while Bellinger remains unsigned, yay! This is kind of like watching your summer romance start slipping away as fall approaches, all while your other love interest (the "backup") has stopped texting you completely because they are being courted and love bombed by your boss. Good stuff.

The Yankees can make all of this pain go away by finalizing an agreement with Belli, but Scott Boras isn't going to make that easy. Tucker remains a thorn-in-the-side subplot, and the Yankees' offseason continues to carry the scent of a Manhattan sewer. Ryan Weathers, bless his soul, isn't doing much to deodorize the situation.
