A year ago, Juan Soto was donning pinstripes as the New York Yankees opened the 2024 season on the road in Houston against the Astros. Somehow, it resulted in a clean four-game sweep in favor of the Yanks, with Soto delivering the dagger.
In the top of the ninth against closer Josh Hader, Soto logged his third hit of the day and drove in the game-winning run with a single to left field. In the bottom of the ninth, Soto threw out the game-tying run at the plate. Yankees fans couldn't have been happier.
Fast forward a year, and Soto was back in Houston, but this time with the crosstown Mets, who suffered an Opening Day loss to the Astros. This time, Soto did not get the best of Hader — the left-hander struck out the star slugger to end the game and seal Houston's 3-1 victory.
As you can imagine, it's brought out the worst in fans everywhere. Head over to social media and you'll see "$765 million for this?!" all over the place. But guess what? It's not just the know-nothings trolling behind their phones and keyboards. It's ... mainstream media!
Boomer says Juan Soto is not a "needle mover," and the Mets "way overpaid" 😳@WFANmornings pic.twitter.com/q8W6bz6mpG

Media wildly overreacts to Juan Soto striking out to end Mets' loss as Yankees fans laugh
Welcome to the party, Mets fans! This is what it's all about when you're in the spotlight and employ the richest player in the sport. And if you thought the early Boomer and Gio slot was the only show talking about this, we've got plenty more for ya.
The topic was also discussed on the Brandon Tierney and Sal Licata show, though they definitely handled it better in regard to the "outrage" being completely asinine. Then again, the fact we're even discussing any criticism of one of the best players in the sport after the first game of the season with his new team is as dystopian as it gets from a media perspective.
As Yankees fans, we can tell you this is completely unfair. But, as Yankees fans, we can also tell you that this is your new reality, Mets fans. Remember Aaron Judge's slow April in 2024? When everybody thought the Yankees were hiding an injury and that their one year of Soto was completely doomed? It's just the nature of the news cycle when the expectations are sky high and the coverage is 24/7.
If anything, the conversation should've centered more around Clay Holmes and how Mets fans thought he was going to be shutting down opposing lineups in his first game in a completely new role.
The Mets have far from avoided the back pages over the years, but they certainly haven't been the star of them, nor have they captured the brunt of the criticism in their own city. You stole Soto from the Yankees? Congratulations. Here's the short-term consolation prize until he starts bashing homers consistently enough to make fans and media personnel forget about his most recent failure.
