As the opening hours of the MLB season passed along with characteristic excitement and optimism, Boston Red Sox fans took some time away from that wholesomeness to troll Jazz Chisholm Jr. and the New York Yankees.
The Athletic's Jim Bowden supplied the ammo for such chastisement when he published a highly-questionable prediction on Wednesday forecasting that the Yankees will reward Chisholm with a 10-year, $300 million contract following the 2026 season.
Bowden's thinking here was nuts. Brian Cashman totally isn't going to give Chisholm $300 million, but that didn't stop Red Sox fans from taking the opportunity to engage in some mockery.
Boston-based sports media voice Gordo re-posted the Bowden prediction with the message, "I'd do anything", suggesting that a Chisholm deal of such proportions would greatly harm the Yankees and would thus be a wondrous outcome for Boston.

Red Sox fan @TJBennettt37 was in Gordo's comments with the reply, "I would laugh uncontrollably lol", pretty much summing up how other Boston fans were eagerly poking fun at the expense of Chisholm and the Yanks.
Chisolm, of course, is used to getting made fun of by online trolls. Besides having interacted directly with Red Sox accounts on occasion, Jazz was widely scoffed at during the offseason for reportedly voicing his aspirations for a $35 million AAV deal, and once again when he said he's shooting for a 50-50 season in 2026.
In regard to the latter comment, Chisholm gracefully defended this stance in the second inning of Wednesday night's opener while he was being interviewed in the middle of the game. (These in-game interviews with guys who are trying to play defense at the same time are absurd, but that's another conversation.)
Chisholm said, in response to the 50/50 stuff, "Why not shoot for the stars and land on the moon?", essentially explaining that while he's unlikely to achieve 50/50, setting a realistic goal for himself would only limit his ceiling. It was both a logical and charming explanation from the Yankees second baseman.
If it had been Marcelo Mayer saying these things, Red Sox fans would be making T-shirts emblazoned with the stars and moon quote. Of course, these same fans were bound to make fun of Chisholm for the same words, just as they are presently demeaning the concept of Jazz getting paid big money.
Given how productive Chisholm has been over the past year-plus, it's odd that fans are shooting down the notion that he deserves a huge contract. Or, maybe it's not. What we've been reminded of through Aaron Judge's career is that big-time production invites scorn from opposing fan bases even more notably than it solidifies a player's reputation in positive fashion.
Perhaps Red Sox fans forgot about their Chisholm vitriol once they saw their own club achieve a 3-0 victory on Thursday. Jazz can place himself in their minds once again when the Yankees visit Fenway Park on April 21.
