Gerrit Cole and the New York Yankees will look to take the second and final game of the Subway Series on Wednesday night, but they’ll have to beat a former Cy Young Award winner to do so.

Justin Verlander (2-3, 4.85 ERA) gets the ball against his former Houston Astros teammate – who is having a great season in 2023, posting a 7-1 record with a 2.84 ERA.

Both of these teams have struggled on offense with the absences of Aaron Judge and Pete Alonso, and oddsmakers have taken notice by setting a rather low total for this matchup.

Do the Yankees stay hot in Cole’s starts? Or will Verlander get the best of the Bronx Bombers again?

Here are the odds and my best bet for Wednesday’s showdown:

Yankees vs. Mets prediction and pick

There are several reasons to like the Yankees in this game, starting with their record with Cole on the mound.

New York is 11-3 in Cole’s 14 starts, and he’s course corrected after a rough finish to May with strong starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox.

Meanwhile, the Mets have not had the same success with Verlander on the mound.

The veteran is having a rough season on the whole, ranking in the 19th percentile in average exit velocity against. He’s struggling to miss bats in 2023, and it shows in the advanced numbers. The righty is in the 29th percentile in strikeout percentage and 22nd percentile in whiff percentage.

That’s a big reason why Verlander has a 4.85 ERA and 4.91 Fielding Independent Pitching mark.

While neither of these offenses has looked good as of late – especially with Alonso and Judge out – I think the Yankees have the advantage on the mound here.

If this game does get decided by the bullpens, New York has the advantage there as well, ranking No. 1 in bullpen ERA at 2.76 entering this series. The Mets come into the Subway Series with a 4.34 bullpen ERA.

As long as Cole is on the mound, the Yankees are always worth a bet – especially as underdogs.
