What was your favorite moment of Enyel De Los Santos' Yankees career? Was it Saturday, when he was claimed off waivers and departed the system?
The Yankees righty, acquired at the deadline in a last-minute scramble, likely saw the writing on the wall when he was left to die on the mound in Monday night's blowout loss to the Chicago White Sox. Of course, it wasn't really a blowout when he arrived; the Yanks trailed 5-2, but carried a tuckered-out bullpen after Clay Holmes' 45-pitch save against the Texas Rangers. De Los Santos' job was either to take care of business or to fail over and over again while saving his compatriots some work. He chose the latter, allowing seven runs to a 90-loss team.
Though he hung around in the bullpen on Tuesday, the Yankees sent him through the waiver process on Wednesday afternoon in order to promote that night's starter, Will Warren. Some fans held out hope that he'd clear waivers and contribute at least something down the line to avoid turning one of Brian Cashman's three deadline swaps into a total wash.
The White Sox had other plans. Less than a week after battering him around the ballpark, they claimed him in order to replace right-hander Dominic Leone, who hit the 60-Day IL this week after the Yankees hit him around a little bit on Wednesday.
Yankees reliever Enyel De Los Santos joins Chicago White Sox
In 6 1/3 innings with the Yankees, De Los Santos wound up with a somewhat remarkable 14.21 ERA across five outings. At the time of the trade, it felt fair to argue that Cashman hadn't done enough to address the Yankees' bullpen woes. Now, that assessment is undeniable, given that one of his two additions flamed out in a matter of weeks and now resides on the South Side of Chicago.
Perhaps, if this move works out, the Yankees should consider immediately signing more relievers they've recently crushed -- oh, wait. They did that exact same thing with Tim Mayza already. Fingers crossed!
