Yankees DFA trade deadline addition after disastrous start in roster overhaul

We literally hardly knew ye.

When the New York Yankees forced trade deadline addition Enyel De Los Santos to soak up nearly 50 pitches in Monday's bludgeoning against the Chicago White Sox, it seemed plausible they were angling for a swift DFA. But ... would they really do that just two weeks after the trade deadline? No way, right? They must've seen something in De Los Santos to surrender Brandon Lockridge in exchange for him. Plus, the bullpen isn't exactly flush with arms. This isn't the Dodgers and their infield logjam, which resulted in the departure of Amed Rosario.

On Wednesday afternoon, we got our answer: yup, the Yankees absolutely would do that.

With several bullpen additions on the mend, the Yankees chose to send De Los Santos onto the waiver wire after 6 1/3 dreadful innings in pinstripes, during which he posted a 14.21 ERA, batters hit .419 off of him, and he famously surrendered seven earned runs in 1 2/3 innings against the ChiSox in his pinstriped finale.

He might clear waivers and return to Triple-A. If not, though, that means the Yankees sent two-thirds of their trade deadline into exile on Wednesday, placing Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day IL with an elbow sprain. The Yankees seem to believe he can return in 4-to-6 weeks, and if that's true, then they'll be thrilled. In the meantime, Oswald Peraza will receive some reps and Will Warren will come up to start Wednesday night's affair.

Mark Leiter Jr., it's up to you, bub. Bad past few appearances, dude.

Warren will start Wednesday's series finale against Chicago, and will then return to the minors, replaced by another one of the Yankees' rehabbing arms. Scott Effross? Nick Burdi? Regardless, his return was necessitated by New York's pair of doubleheaders last week. You may remember Warren for holding his own against the Phillies, then struggling to rebound against the Angels in the back half of last Wednesday's DH.

No matter who returns, Yankee fans begging for a new-look bullpen will probably be excited it's not De Los Santos, even though his departure turns this year's trade deadline into a farce.
