From the people that brought you an entire offseason of calling the New York Knicks' trio of stars the "Mid Three" before realizing oh, whoops, the Knicks are really good and we love this team, here comes the sequel: Panicking About the Yankees' March 1 Lineup Against the Nationals Because it Looks Like Your Personal Opening Day Nightmare.
Prior to Wednesday's spring training lineup drop, fans knew that this particular home game would feature the spring debuts of Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo and DJ LeMahieu. Sounds like an occasion for much rejoicing ... until the monkey's paw curls and you realize the back half of the order was always going to be a showcase for Aaron Hicks, Josh Donaldson and IKF.
Oswald Peraza and Jose Trevino started in Tuesday's non-televised Rays bonanza, and since they get an early spring day off ... the "fan favorite" halves of their March platoons have been assigned to Wednesday's action. It happens. But it's made the crowd restless.
Baseball Twitter Power Users Cespedes Family BBQ were the first to take the "Opening Day" discourse beyond fringe Yankee fan panic drum circles, and the quote tweets/replies were predictably frenzied. New York didn't take their ALCS exit well, and they're not taking a joke this year, either.
Yankees Lineup vs Nationals: Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Kyle Higashioka, Josh Donaldson, Aaron Hicks...woof
Consider Talkin' Jake's mind bent. It's easy to tell people not to take the bait, but it's a lot harder to actually not take it, considering how much we all care about this damn team!
I'd rather read Jake trying to untwist a semi-sardonic mental pretzel 100 times out of 100, though, before being exposed to Blue Jays fans in the replies and quotes calling the entire Yankees lineup "washed." You willingly signed Kevin Kiermaier! You're barely trying to hit up there, eh!
Sadly, this March lineup could eventually result in some account deactivation.
Honestly ... me too.
Very disorienting tweet to read, too, if you're bleary-eyed and getting up at 10 AM.
At least the replies to Cespedes BBQ were kinder than the replies to the actual @Yankees account.
Spring training is, for some people, somehow both meaningless and imbued with the maximum amount of meaning possible.
This is only the "fully whole lineup" because you want to feel anger in its direction, man. Again, Trevino played yesterday. Peraza played yesterday. Higashioka will be leaving for the WBC and needs reps behind the plate (and Trevi needs some rest).
This is just another lineup. The only shame of it all is they weren't able to work Oswaldo Cabrera into it on his damn birthday and ... what's this ... anger ... rising ... becoming the @Yankees Reply Guy Hulk so I can ... defend ... Oswaldo .... !!!
Whew. Sorry. Got furious at an exhibition lineup for a second there. Won't happen again. Please don't let it happen again.
