Through the early portions of the 2025 season, New York Yankees star Aaron Judge has continued to be a regular season star and the cog that makes the team's offense go. However, that success has been met with the continued whispers that Judge can't step up when he's needed the most.
Judge's performance in last the postseason is well-documented. In addition to his infamous error in last year's World Series, Judge boasts a minute .205/.318/.450 slash line in the playoffs during his career despite being one of the most dangerous hitters in all of baseball for almost a decade.
Without Gerrit Cole, and a number of other holes on the roster, there's no guarantee that Judge will get an opportunity this season to rewrite his postseason narrative. However, the Yankees' slugger will undoubtedly get a chance to prove that he can rise to the occasion in a pressure-packed situation next year after being named captain of Team USA for the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
Yankees' Aaron Judge being named Team USA's captain for World Baseball Classic give him opportunity to prove himself
This is a tremendous honor for Judge. He famously wanted to be a part of the WBC back in 2023, but had just signed his massive extension with the Yankees and was named captain. Given his high profile stature and need to perform for New York at the time, Judge opted not to play for Team USA despite his desire to do so.

Judge's inclusion on the 2026 roster is a huge boon for Team USA. Having a superstar like Judge in the fold makes it all the more likely that other big names from across MLB will be willing to participate alongside the Yankees superstar. The timing of the World Baseball Classic can be problematic for players, especially those who want that traditional warm-up for the regular season, but it's easier to accept that if you're going to be surrounded with other high-profile players and could actually win the tournament.
This opportunity to lead Team USA gives Judge a chance to shine on one of the brightest stages in the sport. Nothing can really replace performing deep into October, but the whispers will fade if he can help carry Team USA to a strong finish.
Time will tell if the Yankees can turn things around in 2025, and Judge is definitely doing his part. But if they don't, Judge now has a firm chance to step up and show he can deliver in the clutch next year.
