Yankees could benefit from Mets' coaching purge after Aaron Boone staff shakeup

Ya don't say?

A meltdown in Queens already has the Mets trying to put 2025 in the rearview. Less than two weeks ago, they announced sweeping changes to their coaching staff, with former New York Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza remaining the manager. Other former Yankees coaches weren't so lucky, however.

The Mets are doing their best Yankees impression and gutting the staff around Mendoza. The Yankees have done this twice during the Aaron Boone era, and just about nothing has changed. Don't say we didn't warn you, Uncle Stevie!

As for whose futures are now in question for the Mets, among them were Eric Chavez and Desi Druschel, both of whom have been poached from the Yankees over the last few years. Chavez was hired after the 2021 season and Druschel was brought on last December.

Chavez was the team's hitting coach that year, but was then moved to bench coach ... before returning to hitting coach for 2024 and 2025. He served as the co-hitting coach with Jeremy Barnes the last two years, a decision that he recently criticized the Mets for.

Druschel was an assistant pitching coach for the Yankees and was lured to Queens in the same role. He's been granted permission to interview with other teams as the Mets search for a new pitching coach after firing Jeremy Hefner.

And now, Yankees hitting coach James Rowson is reportedly interviewing for the Minnesota Twins' managerial vacancy, so perhaps a reunion with the Bombers and Chavez is in the works? New York was reportedly hoping he'd step into that role by 2023 or 2024 before the Mets offered him the promotion.

The same could go for Druschel. The Yankees pitching staff was not particularly great in 2025. The rotation performed admirably, but there were stretches in which Max Fried and Will Warren were unpitchable. Same goes for Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, Mark Leiter Jr. and Camilo Doval. Perhaps Matt Blake would like a familiar face back in the mix to give him a hand ... especially after Tuesday's news.

Harkey was with the Yankees from 2008-2013 and then again from 2016 until now. That's a notable departure from the pitching staff. Chapman, who famously got yelled at by Aaron Boone, probably isn't a name fans will lose sleep over, but perhaps Chavez can take his job if Rowson stays? You just never know.

It's possible the Yankees staff sees more turnover. The organization is likely still assessing its situation for 2026 with the season only ending six days ago. Let's just say that we probably won't see the Mets acting as vultures this time around after the Yankees' major flaws were on full display before they suffered their fate, but keep an eye out for Chavez and Druschel to potentially return to the Bronx.
