Remember when Devin Williams and Luke Weaver were showing out for the New York Mets? The duo, especially Williams, had gotten off to an incredibly hot start that had Mets fans trying to poke their New York Yankees brethren. Yankees fans knew better. A Williams implosion was coming. It came on Jackie Robinson Day.
Mired in a horrible losing skid and taking on the Los Angeles Dodgers out in LA, the Mets found themselves on the verge of an eighth-straight defeat entering the bottom of the eighth, trailing 3-1. Hoping to hold the Dodgers down and have a chance at a comeback victory, they called on Williams.
Williams got Teoscar Hernandez to ground to short, but Francisco Lindor pulled a Jazz Chisholm Jr. and failed to charge the ball, turning a surefire out into an infield hit. Williams' reputation for handling adversity was on full display after the blunder, as he'd gone on to load the bases before serving up a grand slam to Dalton Rushing.

The Mets have now fallen into last place in the NL East and are just one loss away from setting their longest losing streak since 2004.
Yankees look on as Luke Weaver joins Devin Williams and the Mets in a downward spiral
Williams ended up getting Hyeseong Kim to strike out, but was pulled after just 1/3 of an inning, giving up four earned runs and essentially killing any chance the Mets had at a comeback. His ERA on the season now is 6.75.
Joining him in the nose-dive is old friend Luke Weaver. After five scoreless appearances to begin the season, Weaver has allowed six earned runs over his last two outings, including four earned against the Athletics on April 11. He now owns an 8.10 ERA and has struck out just 13.3% of batters he's faced.
Yankees fans know full well how these two can provide glimmers of hope just long enough to make you believe, and then proceed to crush your dreams. Remember last June when Williams looked to finally be adapting to New York? After two terrible months, he posted a 0.93 ERA in June, and then followed that up with a 5.73 ERA in July and a 5.06 mark over the entirety of the second half.

Williams craves appreciation, but if he lets this poor outing derail him, as so many hiccups knocked him off track last year, he'll find that Mets fans will be no more appreciative than Yankees fans were.
As for Weaver, one has to wonder if he's still "strongly agreeing" that he made the right choice by choosing Queens over a return to the Bronx. Seeing what's going on with the Mets right now, Yankees fans are certainly glad that he decided to move on.
Not much is going right for the Mets right now, and that's only going to raise the stakes. Given what we know about Williams under pressure, it certainly seems like they're going to be in for a rough time with the former Milwaukee Brewer.
