Did you hear? The New York Yankees lost their fifth game in a row on Tuesday night and Devin Williams blew another save. Wait a minute ... that doesn't sound right! Aren't the Yankees the absolute best and aren't all of their processes ironclad?
Maybe the Yankees of 25 years ago! This version of the Bombers has played sub.-500 baseball since Memorial Day weekend, and there's absolutely no end in sight. Is it the players' fault? Sure. Blame everybody. But manager Aaron Boone has done very little to better navigate the endless slide.
It continued on Tuesday night when he called upon Williams to handle the highest leverage moment in the game just hours after he said he'd be going with a closer by committee. No, it wasn't a save situation, but it was a 0-0 tie and Williams was tasked with facing the heart of the order. Is that not the near equivalent of a save situation? What are we doing here?
Think it's just the fans complaining about it? Not at all. The national media has caught on. Former players and legends of the game have been vocal about it. And now we have the most objective source in the Yankees Universe — Jack Curry — being critical of Boone's decision making.
Curry echoed that using Williams in that spot was questionable due to the nature of the pressure, and it was all the more puzzling because of what Boone said to the media before the game. Not only that, but Curry "would've loved to hear an explanation" as to why David Bednar, who was warmed up after Williams loaded the bases and was clearly about to blow it, wasn't called in to try and stop the bleeding.

Jack Curry wants answers for Aaron Boone's decision making in Yankees' loss
Some fans on social media overreacted and suggested this "could be the end" for Boone, but anybody who knows the Yankees is fully aware that any decision on the manager will wait until the offseason (and likely until after the 2026 season, if we're being honest).
Regardless, in some ways, it seems like Boone might be feeling the heat. His commentary has shifted a bit and he's been forced to make decisions that he otherwise wouldn't be comfortable with, since he rarely opts to rock to boat no matter how poorly things are going.
That said, if the Yankees miss the playoffs, somebody will have to take the fall, and it won't be the front office, even though Brian Cashman and Co. are the biggest culprits for the Yankees' failures during the Aaron Judge window dating back to 2018.
All fans can hope for at this point is that voices like Curry continue to apply a bit more pressure from inside the house because we're far past the point of this play being "unacceptable." It's egregious and shameful.
