Devin Williams seals Yankees fate (thanks, Jasson Dominguez) in awful loss to Rangers

The worst team you've ever seen is at it again.

Any New York Yankees fan with a developed frontal lobe saw Nathan Eovaldi as the opposing pitcher for Tuesday night's game and said "yup, that guys going seven scoreless and we'll lose a nail-biter." What's funny is that while that was the expected outcome, it didn't make it any less egregious when it actually happened.

The Yankees and Rangers were scoreless heading into the bottom of the eighth. Aaron Boone called on Devin Williams — Why? We'll never know — to handle Marcus Semien, Adolis Garcia and Joc Pederson. He got Semien to ground out, but not before another nightmare sealed the Yankees' fifth straight loss.

Adolis Garcia ripped a liner to left field, and he was rewarded a double, but some rabid Yankees fans would disagree with that call. If the ball hits you in the glove, it's more than likely an error, and that's exactly what happened when Jasson Dominguez tried to track Garcia's hit down. Dominguez awkwardly stabbed at it, couldn't haul it in, and Garcia was on second base.

That was all Williams needed to commence the meltdown. He walked Joc Pederson, who had a .260 on-base percentage coming into this game. He's somehow a completely new hitter with the Yankees in town after his game-tying blast off Williams in the ninth on Monday.

Devin Williams just punched his ticket out of New York with another Yankees loss

Boone started to get the bullpen going. Mark Leiter Jr. and David Bednar were up and getting ready. Williams walked Wyatt Langford and it seemed as if the manager would make the call with lefty Rowdy Tellez coming to the plate. But Boone once again left Williams in there to wither away. And that all but confirms it — we will assuredly not see Williams in pinstripes in 2026, if there was still even a shred of a possibility of that happening.

After an absolute battle of a 10-pitch at-bat, Tellez dumped a single into center field on a full count, scoring two runs. The Yankees lost 2-0. That's five straight losses. They have a half-game lead in the AL Wild Card picture. They are going on Month Three of playing sub.-500 baseball.

On the same day the Yankees optioned trade deadline acquisition Jake Bird to Triple-A after his horrible debut with the team and DFA'd JT Brubaker, they fell to 60-54. The Red Sox, meanwhile, won again, and they are 64-51. There isn't a more embarrassing team in baseball than the Yankees right now.

They registered two hits and ZERO walks on the night. The Rangers went 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position as Will Warren, Camilo Doval and Luke Weaver kept them in check for the first seven innings. But New York cannot put together a full game. They aren't a "team" — they are simply a collection of talented players with no vision, no strategy, no heart and no voice.

You thought everybody flipping out about this bad play in mid-June was an overreaction? It's about to get real, real ugly.
