It only took Opening Day for Yankees to put Blue Jays fans in their place

And Toronto did it for us!

While the Yankees kicked off the 2026 season with an Opening Night special on Netflix, the Blue Jays, who represented the AL in the World Series last year, had to wait until Friday to get their first action in. They hosted the Athletics in Toronto, and ended up 3-0 with a clean sweep.

But perhaps an important detail got lost in the shuffle. Perhaps Blue Jays fans wanted this one to get swept under the rug so they didn't have to deal with the fallout. After all, they've now surpassed Red Sox fans as the most senseless trash talkers in the AL East (and probably all of MLB).

On that Friday evening before the official start of their campaign, the Blue Jays unveiled their AL East and AL Championship banner in a ceremony that celebrated the incoming 50th season of baseball in Toronto.

OK, the 50th anniversary celebration certainly gave them an excuse, but the manner in which the banner was made a spectacle - with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer teasing it with a countdown - was something the Yankees would never do.

Blue Jays fans know that. Yankees fans know that. So while the Jays had their moment over the Yankees — literally the only time in the franchise's history they got the better of New York in such a high-profile moment — we're now back to square one. The Blue Jays lost the 2025 World Series in far more agonizing fashion than the Yankees lost in 2024, and then they hung their hat on an achievement that will only be remembered because the manner in which they choked.

And it's not just Yankees fans saying it! Toronto's very own Blue Jays fans are saying it! We respect the honestly and self-awareness here, but it definitely doesn't help the ridicule. Would've been better off tripling and quadrupling yourself to death like Johnny Giunta probably is.

Deep down, everybody knows why this was a special moment for the Blue Jays. Because it came around for the first time in 32 years and Toronto fans have no idea when their beloved team might sniff the playoffs again. You could say they'll have a good chance in 2026, but their history suggests otherwise. 2025 featured their first playoff win since 2016. It was their sixth playoff appearance since 1994.

Nobody here is denying the Blue Jays are a good team. They have a balanced squad and have enough talent to make an October run. We just witnessed it. But the same could've been said for 2015, 2016, 2020, 2022 and 2023. Remember in 2021 when they were so sure they were going to make the postseason and then the Yankees eliminated them on their own turf?

There is no tomorrow in sports. Fans, especially those in Toronto, understand that very well. But it doesn't make celebrating second place any less embarrassing. Just imagine if the Yankees did this in 2024. Twitter would have shut down. The Yankees know the consequences they face. They also have a rich history that views(or did) anything other than a championship as a complete failure.

We'd like to get back to those days and keep the accountability high, but at least we know the organization would never hold a ceremony like this — even if it did coincide with a major franchise milestone.
